McKenzie Onyango (formerly Wagoner) spent one season as an assistant coach for Dodge City CC softball joining the staff in July 2024; working heavily with the pitchers.
She helped the Conqs post a 27-28 record with an 18-14 KJCCC record finishing fifth in the conference. The Conqs recorded their most wins in season since 2005 and a winning KJCCC record for the first time since 2019.
Onyango came to Dodge City after just wrapping up her collegiate playing career as she pitched her final two years of college at the University of North Texas. In her senior campaign, she helped North Texas post a 32-24 record and 17-10 mark in the American Conference finishing third in the conference. She appeared in 34 games with 19 starts in the circle recording a 13-7 record and 2.54 ERA with 82 strikeouts in 135 innings while holding teams to just a .241 batting average. She earned CSC Academic All-District honors and American Conference All-Tournament team during her senior year. During her junior year (first season at North Texas) she was 12-8 in 33 appearances recording 85 strikeouts in 132 innings with two saves and a 1.54 ERA which ranked 25th in the nation and was the second-lowest in single season in school history. Onyango earned second-team All-Conference USA during the 2023 season. North Texas finished 35-22 and second place in the Conference USA in 2023 during her junior year.
Before joining the Mean Green, Onyango started her collegiate career at Liberty University where she was part of two Atlantic Sun Conference championships. As a sophomore, she picked up six wins in the circle in 61 innings with a 2.51 ERA helping Liberty go 44-18. During her freshman season, she recorded five wins in 16 appearances helping Liberty to a 44-15 record and NCAA Knoxville Regional appearance.
In high school, she was named Oklahoma Gatorade Softball Player of the Year in 2020 and earned the Michele Smith Award at Newcastle High School. She helped Newcastle to three straight state tournament appearances including a runner-up finish in her junior year and a state title in her senior year.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from the North Texas graduating Cum Laude.
