John “Koy” Garmrath spent one season as assistant men’s basketball coach for Dodge City CC. He helped the Conquistadors to a 14-9 record during the 2020-21 season. 

Koy was previously at the University of South Carolina - Salkahatchie with Head Coach Jake Williams for the last two years. In his first season he helped the Indians finish with a 21-11 overall record, tying the program record for wins in a season at 21. He was responsible for the development of the 2018-2019 NJCAA Region X Player of the Year and 2nd Team NJCAA All-American, Vince Cole, as well as the 2018-2019 NJCAA Region X Defensive Player of the Year, Ahmad Rand. Ahmad also led all of NJCAA in blocked shots (141 Blocks/4.5 BPG).

During his second season at USC Salkehatchie the Indians finished with a 27-4 record, breaking their previous school record for wins. They went on to win both the Region X Regular Season Championship and the Region X Tournament Championship. Salkehatchie ended the year ranked #7 in the nation with a Sweet Sixteen Bid to the NJCAA National Tournament cut short by COVID-19. He coached 2019-2020 Region X Player of the year, 1st Team NJCAA All-American, and St. John’s University signee, Vince Cole. Additionally, University of Memphis signee, Ahmad Rand, followed up his freshman year with an equally as impressive sophomore year under Koy’s tutelage. He repeated as both the 2019-2020 Region X Defensive Player of the Year and the NJCAA leader in blocked shots (149 blocks, 5 BPG). Garmrath also helped develop North Texas signee Mardrez McBride into a 1st Team Region X performer. He also helped in the development and signing of Keyon Wesley (Arkansas State), Kevin Williamson (Coastal Carolina) and Maliek Wilcox (Clayton State).

Before going to USC Salkehatchie, Garmrath spent three seasons at Arkansas State from 2016 to 2018. In his first season at Arkansas State he worked for then head coach John Brady as a Graduate Assistant. He also worked as the Video Coordinator and Director of Operations. During his second season at Arkansas State he was retained on staff by new head coach Grant McCassland who is now the head coach at North Texas. During his second season with Arkansas State, he assisted with on court workouts, practices, and retained video coordinator duties. During his 3rd year at Arkansas State, he was retained by head coach Mike Balado as a program assistant. Where Garmrath was a 2nd year GA and assisted with on court workout and practices and also video duties. His 3rd year at Arkansas State Current Head Coach Mike Balado hired Garmrath as a Program assistant.

As an undergraduate student, Koy was a student assistant coach for the University Arkansas Men’s basketball program for three years. From 2013 to 2015, Garmrath was a part of teams that went to both the NIT and the NCAA Tournament, bowing out in the Round of 32 in 2015.

A native of Paragould, Arkansas, Garmrath earned his Bachelors of Science in Education with an emphasis in Kinesiology. Koy also earned his Masters in Science and Education from Arkansas State.
