Brad Witherspoon enters his fourth year as Dodge City men’s basketball Head Coach.
In his first year leading the Conquistadors Witherspoon guided the team to a KJCCC title and NJCAA Division I National Tournament appearance, finishing 25-10 overall and 18-6 in KJCCC play. The Conqs finished in the Elite Eight at the National Tournament going 2-1. Witherspoon was named KJCCC Coach of the Year and also earned KBCA Two-Year College Men's Coach of the Year honors. He coached a first team NJCAA DI and NABC All-American in Jason Edwards who was named KJCCC Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, Edwards also was selected to NJCAA DI National Tournament All-Tournament team and Chris Robinson won the Bud Obee Outstanding Small Player award. In his second season team went 9-22 and year three saw the Conquistadors finish 15-17 as he has 49 career wins in three seasons. Eight players have earned KJCCC All-Conference honors during this tenure.
He came to Dodge City after serving as Head Coach at Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa College for the 2021-22 season guiding the Mavericks to a 21-8 record and 12-4 mark in the OCAC winning the Conference title. He had one player earn honorable mention NJCAA DI All-American honors, while two players were selected All-Region, and one was selected as All-Region Freshman of the Year.
Prior to taking over the Mavericks he served as an assistant coach at Barton Community College in the KJCCC for four years where he helped the Cougars amass a record of 93-33 overall and 63-28 in the Jayhawk Conference. Barton finished second in the KJCCC DI or KJCCC DI West standings each year.
After working in the front office for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA, Witherspoon moved into coaching taking an assistant position at Culver-Stockton College where he coached two years and helped recruit a group that went to back-to-back NAIA National Tournaments with an Elite Eight appearance. He moved on to the junior college ranks of working as an assistant at John Wood Community College for three seasons. The Trail Blazers went 46-21 during that time and won the program’s first outright conference championships and first Region championship since 1996 and earned a trip to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. The Trail Blazers also won consecutive league and region championships, consecutive 24-win seasons and national tournament appearances, and a national runner-up finish in 2015 with the help of two First Team All-Americans.
He also spent one season at Doane University and one season at NJCAA Division I school, Kilgore College. He helped the Rangers of Kilgore to a 20-10 season and five players from that team went to the NCAA Division I level.
A former player for the University of Kansas, Witherspoon was a part of teams that held two Big 12 regular season titles, two Big 12 Tournament titles, one Elite 8 appearance, one Final Four appearance, and one National Championship in 2008.
In addition to his two-year letterman playing career under Bill Self at KU, Witherspoon also served as assistant director of numerous basketball camps and the intramural sports supervisor while being a champion in the classroom landing on the Dean’s Honor Roll, named a Jayhawk Scholar Athlete, and was also named to the Big 12 Commissioner Academic Honor Roll.
A Humboldt, Kansas, native, Witherspoon earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from KU in 2009, before earning his Master of Health & Physical Education degree from Emporia State University in 2013.
