Steven Johnson Jr. enters his third year on the Dodge City CC football staff, joining the staff in July of 2023 as an assistant coach overseeing the linebackers and special teams. 

Johnson helped the Conquistadors to an 8-3 record during the 2023 season with the team accomplishing history with the first bowl game win in program history as the team won 35-7 over New Mexico Military Institute in the Wool Bowl. The Conqs finished second in the KJCCC and #6 in the final NJCAA rankings. He worked directly with a handful of Conqs who earned All-KJCCC honors. In the 2024 season, his second season on staff for the Conqs he helped the team post a 6-4 record and finish fourth in the KJCCC and #15 in the NJCAA rankings. 

Johnson came to Dodge City after coaching at Diamond Football Academy during the 2022 season serving as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. In 2021 he spent time with the Washington Commanders during training camp working as a linebacker and special teams coach. 

Before joining the coaching ranks Johnson played football collegiately and professionally. Johnson had a seven-year NFL career starting in 2012 as he signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent to start his professional career. He was part of the 2014 AFC championship Denver Broncos team that played in Super Bowl XLVIII. He would also spend time with the Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Baltimore Ravens totaling 68 career tackles in the NFL with four forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. Johnson earned All-Pro honors on special teams in 2013 and 2014. His professional career continued in 2019 with the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football (AAF) and then with the Seattle Dragons of the XFL as he was drafted in 2020 and was the XFL tackles leader that year and Seattle Dragons Team and Defensive MVP. 

Johnson in college walked on at the University of Kansas and by his junior year earned a scholarship with the Kansas Jayhawks. In 2011 his senior year Johnson led the Jayhawks in tackling playing the linebacker position amassing 120 tackles to lead the team by 30 tackles. He was the Big 12 leader in tackles in 2011 and ranked 14th in the nation leading to being named the team Defensive MVP and earning All-Big 12 honors. He finished KU career with 225 tackles, three sacks, six pass defenses, two forced fumbles, and an interception. Johnson was a two-time captain at KU.

In high school at Strath Haven high school in Wallingford, Pennsylvania he earned first-team All-Delco and All-State at linebacker. He was a team captain and team defensive MVP in 2005. 

Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas, majoring in economics with two minors in business and sports management.
