Born in 1952 and originally from Saint Mary's, Kansas and a graduate of Saint Mary's High School, Phillip "Phil" Pettay studied at Fort Scott Community College and completed his studies at Emporia State University. Phil was named as an Emporia State All-time Academic All-American third team in 1973-74 for men's basketball.
Mr. Pettay began his coaching career at Chase County High School where he was the men's basketball coach for two years before he moved to Pratt Community College. At Pratt, Phil was the head women's basketball coach, assistant men's basketball coach, and assistant football coach for three years. Phil began his coaching career at Dodge City Community College in 1981. He bore the title of volleyball coach in the fall and when winter arrived his title changed to women's basketball coach. For five years his title switched to softball coach in the spring. His records in each sport were astonishing considering he did not have an assistant coach in any of them. He is the winningest coach in DC3 women's basketball history with 141 wins and can boast a winning percentage of .643 with a 193-107 record in volleyball. He was also successful during his coaching of softball, earning a national ranking as high as eight in his first year.
In 1989, Phil and his family left for Tullahoma, Tennessee to become business owners, creating a silk screen printing and embroidery business called Sweat Shop where he is now known as "Pops!"
