Born in 1952, Ed Bethea grew up in Washington, D.C. For his entire young life, Bethea wanted to play baseball and play for the Washington Senators. He was a three-year starter at Eastern High School, leading his team in doubles and home runs, and he graduated in 1971. He attended Prince George's Community College, earning his Associates in general studies in 1977. He was introduced to golf while playing semi-pro baseball in Virginia in 1977 and moved to Lawrence, Kansas. He received his Bachelor's in Education in 1979 from University of Kansas in 1979. 

He began his career in golf as an assistant GPA professional at Alvamar Golf & Country Club and Orchard Executive golf course in Lawrence under head professional Jerry Wilhite. He moved to Phoenix, Arizona and served as an assistant to Gary Yost at University Driving Range before he joined the NGA Arizona Fall Mini-Tour Series in 1981-82 and Spring NGA Texas Mini-Tour in 1982. From 1983-85, he worked at LB Houston golf course in Dallas under head professional Mickey Carey. His final PGA assignment was third assistant at Lake Arbor Golf & Country Club in Mitchellville, Maryland for the American Golf Corporation under head professional James Custer from 1986-87. He came to Dodge City in the early 1990's, becoming the head men's and women's golf coach at Cimarron High School in 1993. In 1999, he came to Dodge City Community College to be the head women's golf coach. 

The DC3 women's golf program has seven Region VI championships, six KJCCC titles, five NJCAA National Tournament All-Americans, 10 players to move on to various four-year women's golf programs (NCAA Division I and NAIA), and 28 athletes to receive All-Region VI player awards while under Coach Bethea's guidance. 

Coach Bethea retired from Dodge City Community College in 2016.
