1976 Women's Track and Field

The 1976 Women's Track and Field team consisted of 10 members and were coached by fellow Dodge City Community College Hall of Famers, Bob and Donnis Schmittt. The team became the NJCAA National Champions in 1976 in Dodge City, Kansas.
Members of the team included: Brenda (Crockett) Roenbaugh was recognized in the National Who's Who in American Junior College in 1977. She attended Oral Roberts University, earning a B.S. in recreation administration in 1979. She and her husband John have two children. Carlen (Thompson) Wilkening, focused on short-distance running at DC3. After graduation, she married her husband Dwight and they have one son. She worked for Consolidated Mfg. for 31 years and then she moved on to the City of Hutchinson to work in the finance department. Charmane (Kuhlman) Kandt attended Kansas University, competing in relays, 400 meters, and long jump. She became a coach from Fort Hays State. After marrying her husband, Greg she received her Doctorate from the University of Arkansas. Glenda (Riney) Davis was from Ingalls, Kansas. She and her husband Rodger own and operate Davis Electric in Cimarron, Kansas. They have two daughters. She is an accompanist for the vocal and band department at USD 102, and the Cimarron United Methodist church. She has been active in the Cimarron Chamber of Commerce. Lucia Von Lintel threw javelin, placing second on the US Track and Field Federation All-American team. After attending Fort Hays State University for one year, Lintel became a horticulture supervisor for the City of Hays, Kansas State University, and the city of Manhattan. She also served in the US Army as a medical specialist. Linda Austin has had several at-home businesses and has two children. Nicky (Proehl) Holloway transferred to Emporia State University, earning a Bachelor's in education, minoring in accounting; she pursued a career in manufacturing. Doreen (Tracy) Ewing was also on the DC3 basketball and was a member of the Conquettes drill team. She transferred to Wichita State after two years at DC3 and qualified for the NCAA Collegiate Nationals at UCLA in 1977 with the relay team. She married a DC3 alum Lee Ewing in July, 1977 and they have three children. She went back to school and received her Associate's of Nursing in 1990. Other members of the team: Connie Zweglich, Lynn Head, and Terry Headrick Abbot (manager).
Dodge City totaled 128 total points at the 1976 NJCAA Outdoor National Championship Track & Field meet hosted in Dodge City behind a host of Top five finishes. Charmane Kuhlman paced the Conquistadors as she won multiple events including the long jump (18'03.5), 440-yard run (57:48), and 220-yard dash (25.53). Doreen Tracy took first in the 880-yard run (2:26.57) and placed third in the one-mile run, while Lucia Von Lintel won the javelin (134'0.5) and placed fourth in the shot put. Both Nicky Proehl and Linda Austin each earned a silver and bronze individually. Proehl took second in the 220-yard dash and third in the 100-meter dash, while Austin placed second in the one-mile run and third in the 880-yard run. As a team the Conquistadors will partner together to win the 440-yard relay (50.33), 880-yard relay (1:46.09), and 880-yard sprint medley relay (1:53.78), while taking second in the mile relay.
