Ray Patterson was born in May, 1943 and he graduated from Rozel High School (Kansas) in 1961. Mr. Patterson graduated from Dodge City Community College in 1963 with an Associates degree. He transferred to Wichita State University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Education in 1965. In 1990, he obtained his Master's degree in Educational Administration from Wichita State University. He was a physical education and driver education teacher as well as gymnastics, track, and football coach at Wichita East High School from 1966-74. He left education to become a loan officer, vice-president, and then executive vice-president of Burdett State Bank from 1974-1986. He returned to education in 1986 as a computer, physical education, and driver education teacher, while also working as a football, basketball, and track coach, along with being an athletic director and principal at Pawnee Heights (Rozel-Burdett) High School until 1997. He became Superintendent of Pawnee Heights USD 496 in 1997. He received the Region VI Principal of the Year award from the Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals in 1996, served as president of the Southern Plains-Iroquois Activites Association, was a member of the Board of Directors Club in 1989. He received the KSHSAA Governor's Award in 2009 and retired the same year. His nephew is Gary Patterson, former Head Coach of the TCU Horned Frogs football team and another DC3 alum. 

He was part of the Rozel High School state championship basketball teams in both 1959 and 1960. While at DC3 Ray lettered in football, basketball (starter), and track both years (the only three-sport letterman for both years in DC3 history). He was also named Junior College football All-American as a defensive back in 1962. At WSU, he lettered in football both years and was named to the Missouri Valley All-Conference team in 1964. He was selected as a starter for the United State Track & Field Federation's national meet in 1972.Â
