Larry Dassie was born in 1955 to Mamie Dassie in Tifton, Georgia. He earned an Associate's of Art degree from Dodge City Community College in 1975 and graduated from Kansas State University in 1977, playing basketball for both the Conquistadors and Wildcats. In 1977, he was part of the team that outright won the Big 8 Conference championship with a regular season conference record of 11-3 and 23-8 overall.
While at Dodge City, Mr. Dassie was recognized and named to the NJCAA All-American team in both 1974 and 1975 earning second-team and first-team honors, respectively. He was selected to the Western Division All-Conference team, All-Region team, All-National team, and the NJCAA National tournament All-Tournament team in 1974 as well. Also in 1974, he set a all-time single game National Tournament rebounding record with 28 rebounds versus Hill College (the record still stands to this day).
Mr. Dassie holds six records at DC3 in rebounding and scoring in 1973-74 and 1974-75 including: Most points scored in a career (1,389); Most rebounds in one game (31 - 1974); Most rebounds in one season (676 - 1973-74); Most field goals in one season (320 - 1973-74); Most field goals in a career (622); Most rebounds in a career (1,291). He also ranks second in school history in rebounds in a season (615 - 1974-75), second in field goals made in season (302 - 1974-75), third (712 - 1973-74) and fourth (677 - 1974-75) in single season points scored. He was a member of the DC3 basketball team winning the first Cowboy Classic Tournament in 1974. Named as Outstanding College Athlete by the Board of Advisors of Outstanding College Athletes of America in 1975. In 1996 he was elected to the NJCAA Basketball Hall of Fame.
After Dodge City he would suit up for Kansas State playing for the Wildcats from 1975-77 where he posted 12.9 points per game adn 8.7 rebounds per game his senior year and finished his two seasons for the Wildcats averaging 10.2 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game. Mr. Dassie played for six National League clubs in England and also played one season in Austria. He won league and championship titles with Crystal Palace in 1978. He averaged 22.2 points per game during eight seasons, scoring 2,527 points in 114 National League games.
He died November 25, 1986 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Wimbledon, England.
