Dick Brown was born in 1928 in Abilene, Kansas to Don and Bonnie Brown. He graduated from Oakley High School in 1946. In 1951, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University and then earned his Master's of Science degree from Kansas State in 1966.
From 1951-57, Coach Brown coached basketball, baseball, and volleyball in addition to being a teacher at Gove Rural High School. He coached basketball, football, and track while teaching at Mullinville High School from 1957-65, winning the State Class BB in 1964. His high school basketball coaching record was 241 wins, 80 losses. Coach Brown came to Dodge City Community College in 1965 and stayed until 1977 as basketball coach, athletic director, and health and physical education division chairman. Two of his teams qualified for the NJCAA National tournament and his college record was 175 wins, 150 losses.
Some other of Coach Brown's achievements are: Assistant Executive Director of the Kansas State High School Association (1977-93), National Junior College Basketball Coaches Association (Secretary-Treasurer: 1972-73, Vice-President 1973-74, and President 1974-75), Region VI National Junior College Coach of the Year (1974), Vice-President of the Jayhawk Conference (1975), Kansas Gymnastics Association LR Dad Perry Award (1985), Phi Delta Kappa member, Distinguished Service Award - Kansas Association for School Health (1989).
