Denise Charmane Kandt was born in 1956 in Garden City, Kansas. She graduated from Dighton High School in Dighton, Kansas in 1974. 

She became a member of the Dodge City Community College women's track team. She was a member of the 1976 Dodge City Community College NJCAA Women's Track and Field National Championship team, where she was a leading individual performer and scorer. During the 1976 outdoor track and field meet she would win individual national titles in the long jump (18'03.5"), the 200-yard dash (25.53), and 440-yard run (57.48). She was DC3's Student of the Year in 1976. After graduating from DC3 in 1976, Denise received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from the University of Kansas in 1978. 
 
Coach Kandt became the head coach of the women's track and cross country teams at DC3 from 1979-83, was a physical education instructor, and became the head coach of the men's cross country team in 1983. The women's cross country team placed fourth in the NJCAA National Championships, 5th in the 1980 Championships, and third in the 1981 Championships, while the track team won the Region 8 Championship in 1983. 

Moving to Hays, Kansas to complete her graduate degree, Coach Kandt was a graduate physical education instructor for Fort Hays State University from 1983-84. She received her Master's degree in Physical Education from FHSU in 1984. In pursuit of her doctorate degree, she moved to Arkansas and was a physical education lecturer from 1984-1988 and completed her Doctor of Education from the University of Arkansas in 1989. 

Dr. Kandt is currently the Neuromuscular Wellness Center Coordinator, Exercise Physiologist, and Virtual Instructor for Fort Hays State University.
