Football Drops Road Tilt with #1 Iowa Western

After picking up the first win of the season last week, the Dodge City football team made their lone trip to Iowa this season, and it was for a date with #1 Iowa Western in Council Bluffs.

The Conquistadors were punched quickly in the matchup, as a special teams score and a defensive touchdown by Iowa Western had the Conqs looking up at the Reivers all game on the scoreboard, ultimately falling 31-0. The Conqs move to 1-2 on the season with the loss.

It was a rough start to the day that left the Conqs behind early as the Reivers took the opening kickoff back 99 yards for a touchdown. Neither team would get much going offensively, but the Reivers struck again this time on a defensive interception and returned the ball 38 yards for another touchdown. Down 14-0, the Conqs saw Iowa Western break a 36-yard run for another score, and while the Conqs moved the ball a bit in the second quarter, they trailed 21-0 at intermission.

Conqs were unable to find consistency in moving the ball in the second half, while Iowa Western put together two more scoring drives for another touchdown in the third quarter and a field goal in the fourth, leading to the 31-0 final.

In the loss, the Conqs finished with 215 yards and at halftime, had more total yards than Iowa Western. Defensively, the Conqs surrendered just 17 of Iowa Western's 31 points and held the Reivers to just 259 total yards.

Jahtavious Gaines led the Conqs defense with six tackles, while Greg Wardlaw and Amarius Perdue each had five tackles. Dontavious Carter had three tackles and a sack.

Offensively, Tim Carpenter was 18-22 for 138 yards, while Britton Holmes Jr. caught four passes for 43 yards, and Brylee Perez carried the ball seven times for 48 yards.

Conqs return home to host Independence on Saturday, September 19th for a 1:00 pm kick as they look to get back on track.
