A home run party broke out in Pratt on Wednesday as the Dodge City softball team blasted 12 home runs in the doubleheader sweep of Beavers, claiming victories of 16-0 and 11-1, both in five innings.
The Conquistadors improved to 34-12 on the season and 16-4 in KJCCC action, while stretching their win streak to nine straight, the longest win streak under Head Coach
Mike Viramontez. The Conqs have won 12 in a row in the series against Pratt.
Another offensive explosion gives the Conqs 21 games this season in which they have scored 10 or more runs.
The Conqs return home on Saturday, April 18th, to take on Hutchinson in a battle of top KJCCC teams with a doubleheader starting at 4:00 pm.
Game 1 – Won 16-0 at Pratt (5 innings)
The Conqs started the scoring early and got rolling with the long ball as
Cadie McCracken belted a solo home run, and three batters later in the first,
Loren Sweat left the ballpark, hitting a three-run home run. Pratt managed a pair of base runners in the bottom of the first on a walk and a hit batter, but they were unable to score, and the Beavers would not be able to generate another runner the rest of the game. The Conqs added to their lead with a two-run homer from
Karen Galaviz in the top of the second and then tallied another run to lead 7-0. In the third,
Harley Shoaf drove in the eighth run of the game for the Conqs with an RBI single. After two quick outs to open the fourth, the Conqs had another offensive explosion, as Sweat scored on an error, Cameron Moses hit a solo home run, then Galaviz tattooed a three-run homer, and
Avery McCloskey added a three-run home run, leading 16-0. The fifth inning was quiet for both teams as the Conqs shut the door on their 11th shutout of the season.
The duo of
Karli George and
Shyann Clark tossed a five-inning no-hitter for the Conqs. George threw three innings, giving up just a walk and a hit batter, while striking out seven. Clark threw two scoreless innings, facing the minimum six batters during her time in the circle.
At the plate,
Sophie Faidley led the Conqs, going 3-4 with two doubles and a run scored, while five different Conqs had a home run. Galaviz was 2-3 with two home runs, five RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. McCracken added a 2-2 game with three runs scored, an RBI, and two walks.
Game 2 – Won 11-1 at Pratt (5 innings)
After hitting six home runs in game one of the day, the mojo at the plate continued in game two as the Conqs blasted six more home runs, including a solo homer by Galaviz to open the game.
Kloe Nelson got into the home run mix later in the first inning, hitting a two-run shot to lead 3-0. The lead doubled in the second for the Conqs as McCracken cleared the bases with a three-run double. Later in the second, Sweat hit her second homer of the day, scoring two more runs for the Conqs to lead 8-0. Pratt scratched her only run across on the plate in the bottom of the second, a solo home run of their own. Conqs countered the Beavers scoring as Shoaf and Galaviz hit back-to-back solo home runs in the third; for Galaviz, it was her fourth home run of the day. A Faidley home run to lead off the fifth, and the Conqs capped the game with a one-two-three bottom of the fifth to earn the 11-1 victory.
Jordyn Boxberger tossed all five innings, giving up just one run on four hits and no walks, while striking out three.
Galaviz stayed hot at the plate, going 3-3 with three runs scored, two home runs, and two RBI, while Sweat was 2-2 with two runs scored, two RBI, a home run, and a walk. Shoaf added a 2-2 game with two runs scored, an RBI, and a home run.
