Baseball Grabs Ninth Win of Season With Victory Over NWOSU JV

Dodge City baseball made it five in a row all at home as they picked up a 16-9 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State University JV on Monday.

The win improves the Conquistadors to 9-4 on the season and 5-0 at home.

The Conqs started the day falling behind as NWOSU JV notched a pair of doubles to open the game and scratched a run across in the first to lead 1-0. In the bottom of the first, the Conq bats got into full swing with seven hits to score 10 runs. A three-run homer by Hunter Morgan highlighted the first for the Conqs, along with a two RBI triple by Lex Lummus and an RBI double by Jordi Guerrero. The top of the second saw NWOSU JV tally four, including a three-run home run, tightening up the game, and then they scored four more with another three-run homer highlighting the fourth. The Conqs offense went quiet after the first until the bottom of the sixth as the Conqs led just 10-9, but extended the lead back out with six in the sixth. Lummus led the sixth off with a double, and the Conqs had three hits, three walks, and a runner reach on an error to plate six in the sixth. Jonah Andrade tallied an RBI double to lead the charge in the sixth. The Conqs shut the door on the game in the seventh to earn the 16-9 win.

At the plate, Lummus had a strong day, going 2-2 with a triple, a double, two runs scored, two RBI, and a walk. Preston Harrison added a 2-4 game with two RBI and a run scored, while Morgan was 2-3 with a home run, three RBI, three runs scored, and a walk. Andrade finished 1-2 with three runs scored, an RBI, a walk, and a hit by pitch.

On the mound, seven pitchers each tossed a single inning for the Conqs. Cameron Stewart started the contest and was credited with the win, giving up one run on two hits and a walk, with a strikeout. Sam Spencer had a solid scoreless inning, giving up a hit and recording a strikeout. While the trio of Starling Beverding, Jacob Schott, and Cameron Stukenborg tossed the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, respectively, each facing the minimum to stymie the NWOSU JV bats over the final three innings.

Up next, the Conqs take a trip to Hobbs, New Mexico, for a four-game series with #20 New Mexico Junior College on Friday and Saturday, February 27-28th.
