For the sixth time in the last eight meetings, the matchup was a tight battle with the game being decided by single digits on the court as the Dodge City women's basketball team took on Garden City at home and grinding out a 67-60 victory.
The Conquistadors, with the win, moved to 14-0 on the season and 9-0 in KJCCC action. The 14-0 start to the season is the second-longest win streak to open a season in school history.
Over the first 4:15 in the contest, the Conqs struggled, falling behind 14-0 as Garden City grabbed early control and had an electric start. The Conqs showed some composure and settled in to outscore Garden City 13-2 over the final 5:45 of the first quarter, but would trail 16-13 after the first 10 minutes. A three-point basket by
Manuela Piljevic two and a half minutes into the second quarter gave the Conqs their first lead of the night at 19-18, and the Conqs would lead by five, 32-28, after a
Jolie Mantz three-pointer at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Conqs worked the lead to seven only to see Garden City mount a run and grab a 35-34 advantage. After a timeout, the Conqs responded with a 9-0 run to regain control, going up eight, 43-35. In the fourth quarter, the Conqs continued to fend off Garden City, but the game was tied at 52-52 with five minutes remaining. Free throws from Piljevic and
Savi Mi in the final minute of the game solidified the contest for the Conqs, 67-60.
The Conqs, while shooting only 38.5% would net 10 three-pointers and go 17-18 from the free throw line, while also controlling the boards 35-27 to overcome 23 turnovers in the contest. Defensively, the Conqs forced 22 turnovers by Garden City.
Mantz helped lead the charge for the Conqs with 13 points and five rebounds, while Piljevic chipped in 13 points and six rebounds.
Saje Evans tallied 12 points, going 7-7 from the free throw line, and grabbed a career-best nine rebounds. Mi tallied 10 points to give the Conqs four double-figure scorers on the night.
Conqs hit the road for the first time in 2026 to continue the season on Saturday, January 10th, as they travel to El Dorado to take on #14 Butler in a Top 15 KJCCC matchup.
