The rivalry battle continues to be a battle on the basketball court as Dodge City men's basketball was locked in another tight contest with Garden City, working past the Broncbusters 92-83.
The win moves the Conquisitadors to 11-4 on the season and 7-2 in the KJCCC, while marking the 10th win of the season by single digits for the Conqs as they continue to close out games.
It was a strong start to set things in motion for the Conqs on the night, working to a 10-2 lead over the first four minutes of action. With 11:29 left in the first half, the lead made its way to double figures with a
Richard Rojas layup to give the Conqs a 21-10 advantage. Behind rebounds and free throws and efficient offensive opportunities, the Conqs continued to keep Garden City at bay in the first half, all the way to a 45-40 lead at intermission.
In the second half, the Conqs would push the lead back to double figures, working to a 64-50 lead with under 14 minutes left in the contest. Broncbusters managed to cut the lead to single digits with under 10 minutes remaining at 71-62, and the game really tightened up in the final four minutes as the Conqs led just 81-77 with just under four minutes left. The free throw line continued to play a big factor for Conqs down the stretch as they secured the 92-83 victory.
The Conqs finished the night shooting 46% from the floor and were 30-37 from the free throw line (81.1%), while also dominating the boards as they out rebounded Garden City 51-29.
Defensively, the Conqs would also stymie the high-scoring Garden City offense, holding them to just 35.1% shooting.
Derrick Rivers had another stellar performance, finishing with 27 points and going 14-14 from the free throw line, while adding three rebounds and four assists.
Rickey Loftin II chipped in 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while going 8-8 from the charity stripe.
Wesly Rosa recorded his second double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and a career-high 18 rebounds; the game was his sixth double-figure rebound performance.
Andrew Mabry tied his career-high with 13 points on 5-9 shooting.
The season rolls along with another big KJCCC matchup on Saturday, January 10th, on the road against Butler in El Dorado.
