Men's Soccer Outduels Rival Garden City In 4-3 Victory at Home

After settling for a tough tie in the Jayhawk Conference opener, the Dodge City men's soccer team returned home to host rival Garden City and picked up a 4-3 victory. 
 
The win moves the Conquistadors to 4-0-1 on the season and 1-1 in KJCCC play. The Conqs have also now won nine of the 12 meetings in the rival series with a 9-1-2 record over those 12 matches. 
 
Early offense has been a trend for the Conqs this season, and it came again this time against rival Garden City. Conqs would get on the board in the first minute of the contest as Soma Kanazawa netted his third goal of the season. In the fifth minute, the Conqs took a firm grasp on the lead as Keitu Mphomane became the 11th different Conq to score this season, making it 2-0. Conqs made it a 3-0 lead in the 24th minute as Francesco Pennacchio got hold of a ball off a free kick by David Garcia and recorded his first goal of the season. Four minutes later, Garden City broke through and would get on the board with a goal, but the Conqs would score a fourth goal in the first half as Lihle Simelame added his added his name to the list of goal scorers for the Conqs and Dodge City carried a 4-1 lead into the halftime. 
 
Coming out of the halftime, Garden City took early control and went on the attack, and it would pay dividends for them as they got on the board in the 50th minute and then a minute later would score on a corner kick to make it a one goal contest at 4-3. The Conqs would continue to fend off more advances by Garden City throughout the remainder of the match, even one in the final 16 seconds of the contest, holding on for the 4-3 victory. 
 
Conqs were outshot 22-19 in the contest with four different goal scorers on the day as Kanazawa, Mphomane, Pennacchio, and Simelane each scored. David Garcia finished with a pair of assists, while Davide Dalla Francesca and Brian Hara each notched an assist. Rensho Ishikawa recorded five saves in the win. 
 
The Conqs now have a week off and will look to continue to build through practice, preparing for their next contest against #7 Barton, which is set for Sunday, September 21st at 3:00 pm.
