On the road again the Dodge City softball team took on rival Garden City and fell in a couple of tough Jayhawk Conference contests, 10-6 and 12-11.
The Conquistadors with the losses move to 19-19 on the season and 11-9 in KJCCC action.
Conqs now have a week off and will be back in action against Barton on Wednesday, April 9th at home with doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
Game 1 – Lost 10-6 at Garden City
The Conqs found themselves behind early as Garden City plated a run in the bottom of the first and then tacked on four more in the second. In the top of the third, the Conqs had three straight singles to load the bases and a fielder's choice by
Elly Tancayo would bring in the Conqs' first run of the day. Garden City matched the Conqs in the third with a run, also and led 6-1. A solo home run by
Josie Oakley led the fourth inning off for the Conqs but again Garden City would counter with a run in the fifth. The top of the sixth saw the Conqs score another run before Garden City scored three in the sixth. Down to the final three outs, the Conqs continued to fight in the seventh and
Whitley Cash and Oakley each had an RBI double, and Ryle Miller had an RBI single for three runs. The Conqs would be only able to plate three in the seventh as the comeback fell short with a 10-6 final in favor of Garden City.
Oakley paced the Conqs at the plate with a 3-3 game with two RBI, a run scored, a walk, a double, and a home run.
Karen Galaviz,
Elly Tancayo, and Miller each had a 2-4 performance.
Jordyn Boxberger pitched five innings of action, while
Shyann Clark tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
Game 2 – Lost 12-11 at Garden City
Looking to bounce back in game two the Conqs would once again find themselves behind early as Garden City tallied three runs in the first inning. A solo home run by Miller would get the Conqs on the board in the second and then an RBI double by Cash in the third plated another run for the Conqs, however, Garden City also scored a run in the second and third innings. In the fourth, the Conqs had an outburst of offense to tally seven runs and take the lead as Galaviz, Tancayo, Miller, and Oakley each had RBI singles, while
Campbell Anderson had a two-RBI single in the inning. After four innings the Conqs led 9-6 and then made it 10-6 with a Miller RBI single in the fifth. In the top of the seventh, the Conqs got on the board again as Tancayo drew a bases-loaded walk making it 11-7. Garden City would battle back in the bottom of the seventh hitting a three-run home run to make it a one-run game and belted a two-run home run to score five in the inning and the Conqs fell 12-10.
Galaviz, in the loss, had a 3-5 game with a run scored, a double, and an RBI, while Anderson added a 2-3 game with two RBI. Miller had a strong game going 3-5 with three RBI, a run scored, and a home run, while Oakley added a 2-4 game with an RBI.
Anistyn Marcotte tossed 2.1 innings of action, while Clark threw 4.1 innings in the loss.
