Baseball Sweeps Otero In Midweek Doubleheader

Dodge City baseball stepped out of conference play for an early week doubleheader against Otero and would grab a pair of wins, beating the Rattlers 15-5 and 10-8.

The Conquistadors with the wins improve to 15-10 on the season and will return to KJCCC action later this week as they will host Butler on Thursday, March 20th at 1:00 pm and then travel to El Dorado on Saturday, March 22nd to finish the series with Butler. Conqs have 12 of the last 16 meetings with Otero in the series.

Game 1 – Won 15-5 vs Otero
Otero opened the game getting a hit and three walks in the first inning scoring the initial run of the ball game, but the Conqs worked out of the early jam just giving up one run. In the bottom of the second, the Conqs grabbed the lead scoring four runs including a three-run home run by Calvin Warrillow to make it 4-1. Otero countered in the top of the third scoring three of their own to draw even at 4-4. The bottom of the third would see the Conqs break the game open by batting around and scoring nine as Warrillow belted his second three-run home run of the game, while Josh McClintock added a solo home run and Cory Chostner hit a two-run homer in the inning. Otero got a run in the fourth, but the Conqs plated two in the bottom of the fourth with a two-RBI single by Seth Brown. Wyatt Sadleir capped the game for the Conqs by striking out the side in the top of the fifth giving the Conqs a 15-5 five-inning win.

Manuel Burguesa earned the win on the mound throwing four innings giving up five runs on six hits, four walks, and one hit batter, while striking out six.

Warrillow led the Conqs offense going 3-3 with two home runs, three runs scored, six RBI, and a double. Jose Alfonso added a 2-2 game with a walk and three runs scored, while Chostner was 2-2 with a home run, two RBI, a walk, and three runs scored.

Game 2 – Won 10-8 vs Otero
Just like game one it would be Otero taking the early lead as they plated two runs in the top of the first and it would start a trend of at least one run in every half-inning throughout the game by each team outside of the sixth for each team. The Conqs matched Otero's two early runs with two in the bottom of the first. Otero regained the lead at 3-2 with a run in the second but the Conqs tallied four in the second with a two-RBI single by Cameron Stukenborg highlighting the inning. Conqs added two in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the fifth, while Otero scored one in the third, fourth, and fifth innings and two in the seventh but it was not enough. In the seventh, the Conqs despite giving up two runs shut the door and sealed the 10-8 win.

Caleb Tucker in 3.2 innings of relief earned the win giving up three runs on five hits and no walks, while Javier Pena picked up the two-inning save.

McClintock led the Conqs at the plate going 3-5 with two runs scored, a home run, and two RBI. Brown added a 1-3 game with two runs scored, a walk, and a triple. MD Conner was 1-1 with a run scored, an RBI, a walk, and two hit by pitches.
