Women's Basketball Wins First Ever Region Title in Program History

Check the box, that is exactly what the Dodge City women's basketball team did by accomplishing another goal winning the Region 6 Championship with a 55-35 victory over #20 Coffeyville.

The region title is the first in school history for women's basketball and moves the Conquistadors to 29-4 on the season. The 29 wins match the most wins in a single season for the Conqs matching the 2022-23 team.

With the Region 6 and Plains District title, the Cons have earned an automatic bid into the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Casper, Wyoming. The trip to nationals will be the third straight for the Conqs.

The Conqs wasted no time taking control of the matchup as they worked to a 14-2 advantage just over six minutes into the contest with a 10-0 run being part of the early lead. A 6-0 spurt that spanned the end of the first quarter and the start of the second frame would push the Conqs to a 20-5 lead. Throughout the first half, the Conqs would continually stymie Coffeyville and carry a 31-12 lead into halftime. The second half would see the Conqs hold Coffeyville at bay with the large lead established in the first half leading to the 55-35 victory.

The defense was next level for the Conqs holding Coffeyville to their lowest scoring game since the 2018-19 season. The Red Ravens shot just 22.9% from the field and only 15% from three-point range while having 22 turnovers. The Conqs shot 34.4% from the field and had just 13 turnovers.

The Region 6 Tournament Most Valuable Player, Mia Jordan paced the Conqs with 12 points on 6-13 shooting and had seven rebounds. Tayah Morgan added 11 points, while Shorna Preston finished with six points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. Layla-J Cameron and Savi Mi each chipped in seven points, while Konstantina Mantziori finished with six points.

Both Jordan and Preston were selected to the Region 6 All-Tournament team.

The Conqs now await the announcement of the NJCAA DI National Tournament bracket and the seeding assignments. The National Tournament is set for March 25th-April 1st in Casper, Wyoming at the Ford Wyoming Center. The selection show, which will announce the bracket, will take place at 5:00 pm on the NJCAA Network.
