Baseball Hosted KCK For Three-Game Series

Dodge City baseball had a change in the schedule and instead of hitting the road welcomed KCK from the KJCCC East to town for a three-game series.

While the Conquistadors were competitive throughout the weekend the Conqs would fall 12-7 on Saturday in the series opener and then split the doubleheader on Sunday falling 9-3 and winning the series finale 6-5 in walk-off fashion.

The Conqs with the 1-2 weekend move to 7-3 on the season and will be back in action at home again on Sunday and Monday, March 2nd-3rd against Lake Region State for a four-game series.

Game 1 – Lost 12-7 vs KCK
The series opened with KCK grabbing the early lead plating a run in the first and second innings before the Conqs would get on the board in the bottom of the second as Ben Longoria brought in Calvin Warrillow who doubled to lead off the inning. KCK would continue their scoring with another run in the third and then four in the fourth to lead 7-1. After a scoreless fifth, the KCK lead grew as the Blue Devils of KCK tallied three runs and then two in the seventh. The Conqs needed to score in the bottom of the seventh to remain alive and would plate four runs with two-outs then scored two more in the eighth with an RBI double by Josh McClintock highlighting the frame. The Conqs still looking to come back in the ninth got the first two batters on base but would be unable to score falling 12-7.

McClintock and Seth Brown each had a multi-hit game each going 2-5 at the plate, as McClintock had a run scored, two doubles, and RBI, while Brown had an RBI. Four pitchers saw action for the Conqs with Javier Pena tossing a scoreless 2.2 innings of relief late in the contest recording two strikeouts.

Game 2 – Lost 9-3 vs KCK
The Conqs would fall behind early in the second game of the series and four straight innings of scoring runs by KCK would prove to be too much for the Conqs to overcome. In the top of the second KCK took the lead with a pair of runs, but the Conqs cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the second as Cameron Stukenborg drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. The Blue Devils would get another run in the third, four in the fourth, and two more in the fifth. In the ninth Jose Alfonso belted a solo home run and then Cory Chostner would record an RBI single, but the Conqs would be unable to get anymore falling 9-3.

Alfonso was 2-3 in the loss with a home run, while Longoria added a 2-2 game with a run scored and two walks. Chostner also had a multi-hit game finishing 2-3 with an RBI and a walk.

Game 3 – Won 6-5 vs KCK
Unlike the first two games of the series, it was the Conqs scoring first in the series finale as Stukenborg got things rolling with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second. The lead double for the Conqs in the third as Josh McGuin had an RBI double and Chostner followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0. KCK would work the game to a tie with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and then each team got another run to have the game even at 5-5 forcing extra innings. In the bottom of the ninth Stukenborg led the frame off with a single and then with two outs Longoria delivered the walk-off single to right field to give the Conqs a 6-5 win.

Four Conqs had a multi-hit game in the win led by Stukenborg who was 3-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a home run. McGuin added a 2-4 game with a double, run scored, and RBI, while Chostner was 2-3 with a run scored and RBI. Longoria finished 2-5 with a run scored and RBI.

Will David had a solid 4.2 innings pitched as the starter for the Conqs, while Marcos Santiago threw 3.1 innings of relief giving up just one run on two hits and two walks. Stukenborg tossed a scoreless ninth inning and earned the win in relief.
