Men's Basketball Has Lead Slip Away in Road Loss Versus Barton

Dodge City men's basketball continues to have strong road performances this season as they battle top-flight competition but could not hold on against #15 Barton falling 93-79. 

The Conquistadors' loss drops them to 10-15 on the season and 7-12 in KJCCC action. 

Conqs opened the game strong with a Derrick Rivers three-pointer and Daouda Cisse layup to make it 5-0 and led 7-2 when Barton used an early timeout just three minutes into the contest. The 7-2 lead turned into a 13-2 advantage over the next two minutes and the Conqs would continually hold the lead throughout the first half. With just under five minutes remaining in the first half Barton drew within one at 31-30 but the Conqs answered outscoring Barton 10-5 for the remainder of the first half to lead 41-35 at intermission. Five minutes into the second half the lead grew back to 11 for the Conqs as Jamari Gamble with a jumper made it 51-40. Conqs held on to the lead until 5:19 left in the game when Barton tied the contest up at 70 apiece and then the Cougars took the lead on a free throw 71-70 and would not give the lead back. The Conqs would be outscored 23-9 from when Barton tied the game leading to a tough 93-79 loss on the road. 

Offensively the Conqs were solid shooting 48.2% from the floor and 9-18 from three-point range, but Barton countered by shooting 51.7% from the field and was 27-36 from the free throw line. 

Mynor Strong posted a career-high 29 points on the evening as he was 10-16 from the field and 5-6 from three-point range. Rivers and Keshawn Brown Jr. each contributed 13 points as Rivers was 5-10 from the floor and Brown was 9-10 from the free throw line. Gamble chipped in 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. 

Conqs return home on Wednesday, February 19th to take on Fort Hays Tech Northwest at 7:30 pm.
