Dodge City men's basketball picked up its fourth straight win and third of the season against a Top 10-ranked team, beating #10 Coffeyville 76-68 on the road.
The victory moves the Conquistadors to 8-3 on the season and 4-1 in KJCCC action. The victory is the first road win over Coffeyville since the 2021-22 season and is the 40th Jayhawk Conference win of Head Coach
Brad Witherspoon's coaching career.
Both teams got on the board quickly with a bucket, and it was tied 5-5 until just over three minutes into the game, when the Conqs took the lead 7-5 and went on a 6-0 run to take control at 11-5. The lead would work to seven before another run, this time 7-0 by the Conqs, with a three-pointer by
Brad Johnson giving the Conqs their first double-figure lead of the day at 23-11 with 10:34 left in the first half. The Conqs continually kept Coffeyville at a distance throughout the rest of the first half, even pushing the lead to 15, ultimately taking a 41-29 lead into intermission.
In the second half, the Conqs continued to have answers for Coffeyville, spearheaded by the play of
Derrick Rivers, who helped cement the game in the Conqs' favor with late free throws as the Conqs won 76-68 on the road over Coffeyville.
Offensively, the Conqs shot 45.2% and took care of the ball with only 11 turnovers, while the defense was strong, holding the Red Ravens to the lowest point total of the season. Conqs held Red Ravens to 38.9% shooting and just 3-20 from three-point range.
Rivers paced the Conqs, scoring 32 points for his fourth 30+ point performance of the season. He was 10-19 from the floor and 9-9 from the charity stripe.
Jayvion Nurse chipped in 11 points, while
Rickey Loftin II added 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Brad Johnson contributed 10 points for four players in double figures.
Two more games remain before the holiday break as the Conqs will return home on Wednesday, December 10th, against Hutchinson at 7:30pm, and then will take on Pratt on Saturday, December 13th.
