A triple-double, late game heroics, overtime, and down to the wire action, the game had a bit of everything, and for the fifth time this season, the Dodge City men's basketball team picked up a single-digit win, beating Cloud County 81-78 in overtime.
The win moves the Conquistadors to 6-3 on the season and 2-1 in KJCCC action. The victory also marked the eighth in the series out of the last 11 meetings with Cloud County.Â
The Conqs jumped on top early with a quick 5-0 spurt on a three-pointer from
Brad Johnson and a steal and dunk by
Rickey Loftin II. The lead grew to an 11-2 advantage just over four minutes into the contest. The Conqs cooled off a bit, but they continued to stymie Cloud County early, holding the Thunderbirds to just 21% shooting for most of the first half. Conqs moved the lead to 22-12 with 6:22 left and then 25-15, but Cloud County put together a short 6-0 spurt to close the gap to four. Cloud County managed to tighten up the game to a two-point contest going into halftime as the Conqs led 31-29.Â
Early in the second half, the lead slipped away from the Conqs as Cloud County managed to tie the game twice before taking the lead 36-34 with 17:14 remaining in the contest. It was an uphill climb for the Conqs for most of the second half as Cloud County worked to a double figure lead 57-47 with 9:30 remaining. Down 68-63 with 1:15 left, the Conqs got a layup by Loftin II, but Cloud County countered with a jumper to lead 70-65 with 32 seconds left. Out of a timeout, the Conqs would get a three-pointer by
Derrick Rivers and then he would steal the inbounds pass and score a layup to tie the game at 70-70 and Cloud County would misfire as time expired, sending the game to overtime. After trading the first two buckets of overtime, the Conqs scored five unanswered to take control and would ultimately cap the game with free throws, winning 81-78.Â
Conqs shot just 37.8% from the field but held Cloud County to 38.6% shooting and would record 11 steals and 15 blocks.Â
Wesly Rosa had a career day, recording a monster triple-double as he tallied 22 points on 9-14 shooting and 4-6 from the charity stripe, while grabbing 15 rebounds and blocking 13 shots. Rivers added 18 points with six rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Loftin II tallied 17 points on 7-12 shooting, while
Andrew Mabry had his best performance with 13 points.Â
Conqs are back on their home floor next taking on Colby on Wednesday, December 3rd at 7:30pm before travelling to take on #15 Coffeyville on the road on Saturday, December 6th.Â
