Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Mike Smith

Men's Soccer Ends Season With Tough First Round Playoff Loss

A strong season on the pitch ended abruptly for Dodge City men's soccer as the Conquistadors entered postseason play with a first-round home game against rival Garden City, and the Bronbusters ended the Conqs' season with a 3-1 contest.

The Conqs had been the team to score early throughout the season, but the script was flipped as Garden City pushed forward early, and it paid dividends for the Broncbusters. In the fourth minute, Garden City sent a ball forward on a long pass and made a run on goal, netting the first goal of the game to lead 1-0. In the 12th minute, the Broncbusters extended their lead to 2-0, and then just two minutes later looked primed to make it a 3-0 contest. A handball was called on the Conqs in the box, giving Garden City a penalty kick attempt, as they looked to add to their lead by Rensho Ishikawa would make a big stop. The Conqs finally broke through on a set piece as Sota Kido took a shot from nearly 30 yards and pulled the Conqs to within one at 2-1.

In the second half, the match remained 2-1 with limited opportunities on both sides. The Conqs generated their best looks for a goal off corner kick chances, along with a shot from Ishmael Jones that was saved and led to a rebound shot that went wide left. After a corner kick attempt in the final minute, the Conqs saw Garden City break out a counter and scored with 34 seconds remaining, sending them to a 3-1 victory.

The Conqs would out shoot Garden City in the loss 18-14.

The loss closes out the Conqs' season with a 9-5-3 record as they finished third in the KJCCC and had a four-win improvement from last season.
