Men's Basketball Uses Big Second Half to Cruise Past #5 Cowley

Dodge City men's basketball picked up their second straight win and the latest comes behind a 63-point second half to upset #5 Cowley at home 100-75.

The win moves the Conquistadors to 8-13 on the season and 5-10 in KJCCC action, while snapping a four-game losing streak to the Cowley Tigers.

An early dunk by Wesly Rosa got the Conqs started and then Cowley answered with a three-pointer to lead 3-2 but the Conqs would lead the rest of the way. A Derrick Rivers three-pointer swung the lead back to the Conqs and the lead would jump to 12-6 with under 14 minutes left in the first half. The lead for the Conqs would remain single digits throughout the first half until the four-minute mark when Mynor Strong drained a three-pointer to make it an 11-point game at 29-18. Cowley would not get any closer than six in the final four minutes of the first half as the Conqs carried a 37-28 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Conqs would continually fend off the runs of Cowley as the Tigers stayed within single digits until just over 11 minutes left when the Conqs stretched the lead back to double figures. With about eight and a half minutes remaining the Conqs would stretch out their advantage and continue to do so leading to the 100-75 win.

The Conqs finished the night with our second-best shooting performance of the season shooting 47.5% while holding Cowley to their lowest shooting performance of the season at just 32.9%. The game also featured 79 free throws combined as the Conqs were 33-43 from the charity stripe.

Rivers finished with a career-high 28 points on 8-17 shooting going 4-9 from three-point range and 8-10 from the free throw line, while adding seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Keshawn Brown Jr. tallied a career-best 24 points going 14-17 from the free-throw line, while Strong finished with 20 points on 6-14 shooting. Jayse Boatwright added a 16-point and five-rebound performance.

The Conqs are set to take on another ranked opponent on Saturday, February 1st when they travel to El Dorado to face #15 Butler at 4:00 pm.
