Free Throws Down the Stretch Secures Women's Basketball Win Over Cowley

In a battle of the top two scoring teams in the KJCCC, it would prove to be more of a defensive battle overall, going down to the wire, as the Dodge City women's basketball team edged Cowley 64-61. The Conquistadors would go 10-12 from the free-throw line in the final minute of the contest to secure the win. 

The Conqs improved to 19-2 on the season and 14-1 in KJCCC action, while stretching their win streak to 21 straight at home. 

Conqs would open the game on a 5-0 run, but Cowley answered back with five-straight points and the Tigers would snag the lead at 8-7 on a free throw. The Tigers continued to own the advantage down to the end of the first quarter when the Conqs had a chance to tie it but came up short trailing 12-10 after the first quarter. Conqs drew even at 14-14 with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half and then a free throw gave the Conqs the lead back at 15-14. The game would be tied several times down the stretch in the first half until the Conqs finished the half with two layups to lead 26-22 at intermission. 

In the second half the game would remain tight and both teams would hold a lead with the Conqs taking a 42-41 advantage into the fourth quarter. With five and a half minutes remaining Cowley owned their largest lead at four (51-47) but the Conqs went on a 7-0 run to lead 54-51, Cowley snagged the lead back until the final minute of the game. In the final minute of the contest, the Conqs would snatch the lead at the free throw line and go 10-12 from the free throw line in the final minute to secure the 64-61 win. 

The Conqs finished the night shooting 40.4% hitting nine three-pointers and went 17-25 from the free throw line for the game, while Cowley shot just 36.5% from the field. 

Shorna Preston led the Conqs with a career-high 20 points on 6-9 shooting going 2-2 from three and 6-10 from the free throw line while adding seven rebounds and three steals. Konstantina Mantziori matched her career-best with 15 points on 5-8 shooting including 3-5 three-pointers and 2-2 free throws. Layla-J Cameron added 13 points including 8-8 from the free throw line including 6-6 in the final minute of the game from the charity stripe. Mia Jordan added eight points and six rebounds off the bench. 

The Conqs hit the road on Saturday, February 1st at 2:00 pm in El Dorado against Butler who is receiving votes in the latest NJCAA DI rankings.
