For the eighth time this season, the Dodge City men's basketball team took the court against a ranked or receiving votes team as they battled with #12 Coffeyville on the road. The Conquistadors were unable to stay with Coffeyville offensively falling 80-67.
The loss drops the Conqs to 6-11 on the season and 3-8 in KJCCC action.
Coffeyville tallied the first two buckets, but the Conqs countered with a
Derrick Rivers three-pointer and
Jayse Boatwright bucket to lead 5-4 just over two minutes into the contest. Over the next four minutes, Coffeyville outscored the Conqs 12-3 to establish a 16-8 advantage nearly six minutes into the contest. The Conqs continued to push but the Coffeyville lead grew to 16 at 26-10 with ten minutes remaining. As the first half went on the Conqs hit a rough scoring stretch and fell behind 36-19 with 4:21 remaining in the first half. Coffeyville would carry a 51-26 advantage into halftime. Throughout the second half the Conqs tried to make a push and late in the contest slowly crept closer to close the gap but ultimately fell 80-67.
Conqs shot 38.2% from the contest, hitting 10 threes, and only had eight turnovers but Coffeyville shot 41.7% in the contest and would outrebound the Conqs 54-33.
Rivers finished with 17 points including hitting 5-9 three-pointers adding three rebounds and two assists.
Jamari Gamble tallied 14 points on 6-12 shooting with three rebounds, while
Keshawn Brown Jr. added 12 points and five assists.
The Conqs are back in action to take on their ninth opponent of the season receiving votes or ranked on Saturday, January 18th at 3:00 pm as they take on Hutchinson.
