Volleyball Opens Conference Play With Win Over Rival Garden City

In the first rivalry showdown of the 2024-25 year for Dodge City athletics against Garden City it was a battle on the court in volleyball and the Conquistadors would open KJCCC action with a four-set win over the Broncbusters.
 
The Conqs would drop the first set but responded with three set wins to grab the match 19-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-23. The win moves the Conqs to 5-5 on the season and 1-0 in KJCCC action. 
 
The night started in the first set with Garden City mounting a strong start to the match working to a 9-3 early advantage and despite the Conqs battling back to tie the set multiple times it was Garden City with a late push to secure the first set 25-19. The Conqs flipped the script in the second set taking the early lead but Garden City would be the one to fight back until the Conqs grew their lead out late and behind five aces in the set late from Kamalei Wassman won the second set 25-13. Back-and-forth throughout the first half of the third set of the contest but the Conqs made a late surge and propelled themselves to a third-set win. In the fourth set, it would be tight for the first 10 points each as it was tied at 10-10 but the Conqs went on a run and would go up 17-10 and then 22-14. That lead would disappear as Garden City fought back to tie the fourth set at 23-23 but the Conqs rallied the troops and secured the match taking the next two points to win the fourth set 25-23 and take the match. 
 
In the win, Azra Arslanoglu recorded 16 kills and 10 digs for a double-double while adding five block assists. Tess De Zanet and Beatriz Lampugnani Cornachini each had eight kills, while Cornachini added 15 digs on the night. Leisey Keli'i tallied a pair of aces and 17 digs, while Hayden Pinard finished with 25 assists and Wassman had 17 assists, five aces, and four digs. Agnes Hegardt had a strong impact with 12 digs, while Amariah White had nine blocks assists upfront. 
 
The Conqs are set to continue the season competing in their third tournament of the year as they travel to Texas on Friday and Saturday, September 6th-7th to compete at the Odessa College Invitational. They will play #17 Navarro, Temple, Central Arizona, and #14 New Mexico in the four matches at the tournament.
