Dodge City men's soccer opened the 2024 season hitting the road to take on the 19th-ranked NJCAA Division II team in Neosho County in Chanute, Kansas. It was a big second half by the opposition that doomed the Conquistadors as they suffered a 5-2 defeat.
The Conqs would fall behind early as Neosho County registered the first goal of the matchup in the fifth minute of the contest and then just four minutes later got another to make it a 2-0 contest. Continuing to battle the Conqs would get a few solid looks towards the goal and finally broke through in the 29th minute when
Hamza Bennadi pushed in a goal in the top right corner. Approaching halftime the Conqs looked to make another push and it was Bennadi again as he evened up the contest in the 43rd minute with his second goal showcasing some fancy footwork to work around a few defenders.
Tied at 2-2 coming out of the first half the second half belonged to Neosho County as they regained the lead in the 57th minute and then added two more goals in the 73rd and 79th minutes to cap the game at 5-2.
In the loss, the Conqs were out shot 21-10 but five of the ten shots for the Conqs were shots on goal. Both
Felipe Jerez and
Geovanni De Luna both saw time in goal recording five and four saves each.
The Conqs' tough schedule continues as they take on #5 Barton on Wednesday, August 28th at 4:00 pm to open Jayhawk Conference play for the season.
