Baseball Opens Playoff Series With Coffeyville With a 6-5 Win

Dodge City baseball opened the first round of the NJCAA Plains District/Region 6 Tournament hosting Coffeyville in a best-of-three series for the right to move on to Wichita and in game one the Conquistadors squeezed out a 6-5 win over the Red Ravens.

The win moves the Conqs to 37-20 on the season and puts the Conqs one win away from a trip to Wichita for the double elimination bracket play portion of the tournament.

A pair of walks and a single helped the Coffeyville Red Ravens get some early offense as they worked the bases loaded in the first inning by Garret Carter would record a pair of strikeouts in the frame to get out of the inning without surrendering a run. The first run of the game came in the bottom of the second by the Conqs as Peter Tassler brought in Nick Gray with an RBI double. In the fourth Brian Hallum belted a solo home run to make it 2-0 for the Conqs. In the top of the fifth inning Coffeyville would bat around and use three walks and three hits to score three runs taking a 3-2 lead. The lead would flip back to the Conqs in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run by Max Towchik to make it 4-3. In the seventh, the Red Ravens took advantage of three more walks and scored two runs to grab a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Conqs worked in two runs including a bases-loaded walk by Nick Gray, and held a 6-5 lead. In the top of the ninth, the Conqs would get a pair of strikeouts from Gray on the mound and then a huge out on a potential tying run going home as Cooper Schneider threw into Juan Rivera who threw to Tassler at home and got the out to preserve the lead and 6-5 win.

Gray picked up his fourth save of the season by tossing the final inning while Carter got a no-decision as the starter but tossed 4.2 strong innings giving up three runs on four hits, four walks, one hit batter, and struck out seven.

At the plate, Gray was strong also for the Conqs going 2-3 with a run scored, RBI, and a walk. Hallum was 2-3 with a home run, RBI, two runs scored, and a walk, while Tassler added a 2-4 game with a double and RBI. Schneider added a 1-3 game with two walks.

The series continues Friday, May 10th in Dodge City with game two starting at 1:00 pm.
