Baseball Caps Their Season With Tough Loss to Hutchinson at NJCCA Plains District/Region 6 Tournament

After a tough loss against #19 Cowley to open bracket play of the NJCAA Plains District/Region 6 Tournament in Wichita the Dodge City baseball team looked to stave off elimination by taking on #10 Hutchinson and would battle but fall just short 5-4 to end their season.

The loss caps the Conquistadors season at 38-23 as the Conqs finish with the most wins since the 2017 season and a third-place finish in the KJCCC West.

The Conqs would open the day in a big way as the long ball gave the Conqs the lead early behind a two-run home run by Carter Olson. Hutchinson countered in the bottom of the first hitting a solo home run to get on the board but that was it as the potential tying run was thrown out at home from Nick Gray from right field. In the bottom of the second Hutchinson would bring in two runs to grab their first lead of the day but the Conqs had an answer as Andrew Detlefsen belted a solo home run in the top of the third to even the game at 3-3. After tying the game in the top of the third the Conqs however saw Hutchinson push back with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-3. Michael DeBattista would come in from the bullpen for the Conqs and shut down Hutchinson's bats for the remainder of the game while the Conqs looked to push back in the contest. A Max Towchik solo home run drew the Conqs within one at 5-4 in the top of the seventh and while the tying run reached base in the top of the ninth the Conqs were unable to score again falling 5-4.

Conqs would finish with 12 hits in the contest including a 3-4 performance from Detlefsen who had a home run, a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Olson was 2-4 with two RBI, a home run, and a run scored, while Peter Tassler added a 2-3 game and Cooper Schneider was 2-4 with a double and a run scored.

On the mound, DeBattista threw five scoreless innings of relief giving up just three hits and two walks, while striking out four. Brian Hallum threw three innings as the start for the Conqs.

The Conqs finished the season 38-23 having their best season since 2017.
