Men's Basketball Caps Season With Tough Road Loss In First Round of Playoffs

Dodge City men's basketball team opened the Region 6 Tournament on the road in first-round action taking on Northwest Kansas Tech and while the Conquistadors held a halftime lead in the contest it was the Mavericks who took home the victory 85-74.

The loss ends the Conqs season with a 9-22 record as they fall in the first round of the Region 6 Tournament.

Back-and-forth on the first few buckets the Conqs would establish the lead at 10-9 off an Avnoor Bhullar three-point basket with 16:16 left in the first half. That lead would grow all the way to 10 at 30-20 with just over eight minutes remaining in the half as Bhullar drained another three-pointer. However, the Mavericks countered with a 13-2 run to swipe the lead briefly just over five minutes left in the half as Dawson Taylor dropped in a three-pointer to snatch the lead back for the Conqs at 35-33. The Conqs would carry the lead into halftime up 45-42 as they shot 51.6% from the field in the first half including 7-8 from three-point range. The second half would open on an 8-0 run for the Conqs to work to their largest advantage of the game at 53-42 but that lead would disappear as Northwest Kansas Tech tied the game at 55-55 with 13:25 remaining in the contest. It would be tight down the stretch until the Mavericks over the final few minutes would push the lead out to solidify the game in their favor handing the Conqs a tough 85-74 loss to end their season.

Conqs finished the game shooting 44.1% and 8-18 from three-point range while Northwest Kansas Tech shot 42.9% from the floor and 8-19 from three-point range. Both teams struggle with turnovers as the Conqs had 21 and the Mavericks 18.

Hunter Duncan paced the Conqs with 14 points going 5-6 from the free throw line, while Chevalier "Ice" Emery chipped in 13 points. Bhullar capped his Conq career with 12 points and nine rebounds. Taylor a career-high 12 points on 5-7 shooting and grabbed six rebounds, while Tyree Jackson posted 11 points on 4-5 shooting.
