Baseball Finishes Series With Cloud County With A Split

For the fourth straight doubleheader against Cloud County the Dodge City baseball team played to a split of the two games to ultimately split the four-game series.

The Conquistadors would claim victory in game one of the day 11-1 but would drop the second game 6-3 to move to 23-11 on the season and 8-4 in KJCCC action.

Next up for the Conqs will be more KJCCC action as they will battle against #20 Barton starting with two games in Great Bend on Thursday, April 4th, and then will host the Cougars on Saturday, April 6th for a twinbill.

Game 1 – Won 11-1 at Cloud County
After a scoreless first two innings which saw the Conqs threaten with a pair of base runners in each inning, it was the third inning that would see the first runs of the game. The Conqs would plate four runs in the third starting with an RBI double by Joseph Dominguez and then a three-run home run by Andrew Detlfesen. Cloud County got a run of their own in the bottom of the third but the Thunderbirds would be able to only score one. The Conqs would do the remainder of the scoring for the game with a run in the fifth, four in the sixth, and two in the seventh. In the sixth inning, a Dominguez RBI single highlighted the frame, while an RBI single by Jordan Rodriguez highlighted the scoring in the seventh. The Conqs would stymie the bats in the contest holding them to four hits to earn the 11-1 win.

Brian Hallum was stellar on the mound earning the win by tossing five innings giving up just one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out one. Jason Miller tossed two scoreless innings of relief to finish out the contest giving up just one walk and striking out one.

At the plate, the Conqs notched 14 hits with seven different Conqs recording a hit in the contest. Detlefsen paced the Conqs offense as he was 4-4 with three RBI, three runs scored, and a home run. Dominguez added a 3-4 game with two RBI, a double, and a run scored, while Nathan Harmon was 2-4 with a run scored. Max Towchik added a 2-3 game with a run scored, RBI, a stolen base, and a double.

Game 2 – Lost 6-3 at Cloud County
The series finale would prove to be the closest game of the four-game set and it was early runs by Cloud County that gave them the lead which they would cling to throughout the game. The Thunderbirds would tally a pair of runs in the first inning with a few defense miscues by the Conqs leading to the runs. A sac fly by Harmon in the top of the second brought in a run for the Conqs to make it a 2-1 game. In the bottom of the third Cloud County would find two more runs to make it 4-1. The fourth inning saw Dominguez continue his strong series recording another RBI single to cut the Thunderbird lead to two runs. After a scoreless fifth inning, Cloud County added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth making it 6-2. The Conqs would not go away getting a run in the top of the seventh but that would be the only other run to score for the Conqs as Cloud County took the series finale 6-3 for the series split.

The Conqs had 11 hits with 10 coming between four players. Dominguez recorded a 3-5 game with an RBI and run scored, while Juan Rivera was 3-5. Cooper Schneider finished 2-4 with an RBI, while Hallum was 2-5.

On the mound, Michael DeBattista surrendered six runs but only three earned in five innings, while Michael Lopez tossed two scoreless innings of relief and Nick Gray tossed one scoreless frame.
