Dodge City women's basketball picked up their fifth win in a row and 25th of the season as they wrapped up second place in the KJCCC with a 59-57 win over Barton.
The Conquistadors move to 25-4 on the season with the win and 19-4 in KJCCC action with only one more game remaining in the regular season.
Back-and-forth the game would go early as the teams would trade buckets and stops leading to an 11-11 tie with just under five and a half minutes in the first quarter left. The Conqs would then mount a run going on a 9-0 spurt to lead 20-11 and ultimately led 22-16 at the end of the first 10 minutes. The second stanza would be tight also, but the Conqs would work the lead to double figures at 31-21 just three minutes into the second quarter. By halftime, the Conqs would lead 40-32 using the late surge in the first quarter to hold the advantage at intermission. The Conqs would continually hold Barton at bay in the second half clinging to the lead as the Cougars would draw within three, two, and even one point several times. The game would never work to a tie and in the final seconds of the contest, Mia Jordan split a pair of free throws making it a two-point game, while Barton had an opportunity late multiple times but would turn over the ball over multiple times as the Conqs secured the 59-57 win.
While the Conqs would shoot just 31.7% from the floor they would hold Barton to just 39.7% shooting and force 23 Cougar turnovers in the contest, while only having 11 turnovers of their own.
Parris Atkins led the Conqs with 12 points and three steals, while Kyriana Jones chipped in 11 points. Five other Conqs tallied six to nine points in the win.
The Conqs will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, March 2nd at 2:00 pm when they take on Garden City on the road and then gear up for the region playoffs.
