In the final home game of the regular season, the Dodge City men's basketball team faced off with the #1 Barton Cougars, and while the Conquistadors pushed Barton in the contest the Cougars used a strong offensive night to grab the 111-91 win.
The Conquistadors with the loss fall to 9-20 on the season and 7-16 in KJCCC with only one more regular season game remaining before the region playoffs.
The started with a bang for the Conqs dropping three early three-pointers by Avnoor Bhullar, Chevalier "Ice" Emery, and Hunter Duncan to lead 9-0. The lead would be 11-2 early for the Conqs over the first two minutes of action but Barton would come back and tie the game at 13-13 with just over 14 minutes left in the first half. The Conqs would own the lead or be tied until Barton took their first lead at 28-26 with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half. Tied up at 36-36 with just under four minutes before halftime the Conqs would see Barton go on a 6-0 run to take control and ultimately outscore the Conqs 13-8 over the final 3:40 in the first half to lead 49-44 at halftime. A quick 6-0 spurt to open the second half pushed the lead to double figures for Barton and despite some strong efforts from the Conqs, the lead grew for Barton in the second half as they took the win 111-91.
In the loss, the Conqs shot 51.5% from the floor including hitting 10 three-pointers, but Barton countered by shooting 55.7%. The Conqs were hurt on the boards as Barton outrebounded them 43-29 and 14 Conqs turnovers to only six by Barton would plague the Conqs.
Leading the Conqs was Emery who posted 21 points on 7-12 shooting, while Tyler Williams added a career-high 20 points with five rebounds. Bhullar tallied 14 points and five rebounds, while Jayse Boatwright added 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Duncan also tallied double figures finishing with 10 points.
The Conqs wrap up the regular season on the road against Garden City on Saturday, March 2nd at 4:00 pm.
