Men's Basketball Fall in Overtime Against Seward County

Dodge City men's basketball dropped a tough overtime tilt with Seward County as KJCCC action continued as the Conquistadors fell 93-86 in overtime.

The loss drops the Conqs to 5-7 on the season and 2-4 in KJCCC with one more conference matchup left before the Christmas break.

After a pair of three-pointers to open the game by Seward County to lead early 6-2 the Conqs mounted a 10-0 run capped by a Daouda Cisse layup to lead 12-6 with 16:21 left in the first half. The Conqs would remain in front but the lead would be six or less until just over six minutes remaining in the first half when a Keshawn Brown Jr jumper made it 31-23 to give the Conqs their largest advantage of the game. The lead pushed to double figures for the first time shortly thereafter on a tip-in by Wesly Rosa and would make its way to as high as 14 points at 39-25 with three and a half minutes left in the first half.

Leading 41-28 at intermission the Conqs would continually fend off Seward County in the second half despite the Saints drawing close. With just over seven minutes to go Seward County drew with four but the Conqs grew the lead back to 10 points at 68-58 with three and a half minutes remaining. With just over a minute to go Conqs held a 73-65 lead. A pair of free throws and two layups over only 20 seconds of game time made it just a 74-71 contest. With just 12 seconds remaining Seward County knocked down two more free throws and then got the ball back after a Conqs turnover in the final seconds of the contest the officials called a foul sending the Saints of Seward County to the line where they made 1-2 free throws to tie the game at 74-74 and push the contest to overtime.

In overtime, Seward made the first two buckets and would hold the lead the rest of the way. They were 5-6 from the floor and 8-12 from the free-throw line in the extra period, while the Conqs were just 1-10 from the field and 9-13 from the charity stripe. The Conqs' struggles in overtime led to the 93-86 loss.

On the day the Conqs finished shooting 34.3% while Seward County shot just 39.5%, both teams made plenty of trips to the free throw line as the Conqs were 31-43 and Seward County was 25-36.

Mynor Strong led the Conqs with 17 points and grabbed five rebounds. Jamari Gamble and Cisse each chipped in 15 points on the day as Gamble grabbed seven rebounds and Cisse had six boards. Brown Jr tallied 14 points along with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

The Conqs will now prepare for a showdown with Barton on Saturday, December 14th at 3:00 pm at home before heading into the holiday break.
