Another matchup against a top-tier opponent loomed ahead for the Dodge City football team as they hit the road to take on #13 Coffeyville in a top KJCCCC battle and a battle it was to the wire as the Conquistadors late field goal attempt at the end of the game would be blocked leading to a tough 13-12 loss.
The comeback came up short for the Conqs sending them to 6-3 on the season and 3-2 in KJCCC with just one game remaining this season, next week against #10 Butler on the road.
After a short drive by Coffeyville to open the contest the Conqs would move the ball into Red Raven territory on their first drive but stall out just over the 50-yard line and turn the ball over on downs. Coffeyville then took the next drive 52 yards on nine plays working it into the redzone and would go for it on fourth and goal from the one and the Conqs would get the stop to keep the game scoreless. In the second quarter with 8:27 remaining Coffeyville got on the board first with a 33-yard field goal to take the lead. The Conqs would make a push on the next drive getting to just outside the redzone and going for it on fourth down again but coming up short. With just 37 seconds remaining in the first half Coffeyville hit their biggest play off the day a 54-yard touchdown pass making it 10-0 with the extra point. The Conqs would throw an interception the next offensive play and then Coffeyville capitalized on a Dodge City penalty on the next play to push ahead into field goal range to net a 38-yard field goal just before the half to lead 13-0.
With just under 10 minutes to go in the third quarter the Conqs would get a sack on back-to-back plays against the Red Ravens the second one resulted in a fumble that was scooped up by
Kenyan Hunter giving the Conqs a short field. Inside the redzone, the Conqs would end up settling for a field for their first points of the day as
Emanuel Aguilar connected on a 29-yard field goal. Early in the fourth quarter, the Conqs capped an 11-play drive with a 19-yard field by Aguilar to make it 13-6 with 11:30 remaining in the game. The Red Ravens looked to get on the board in the second half lining up for a 29-yard field goal by
Darius Hampton broke through the line to block the try and it was scooped up by
Amarian Louis who returned it 75 yards for the touchdown. After an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Conqs, the extra point try was moved back and would be blocked keeping Coffeyville in front 13-12.
With just over three minutes remaining the Conqs got the ball back and looked to mount a game winning drive and worked the ball down to the Coffeyville 22-yard line leading to a 29-yard field goal try on the final play. The hold was bobbled, and Coffeyville broke through the line and blocked the field goal handing the Conqs a tough 13-12 loss.
Conqs would outgain Coffeyville on the day 367 to 299 total yards but were hurt by 13 penalties for 138 yards.
Defensively, the Conqs saw
Sam Brooks tally his fifth double-figure tackle game of the year, finishing with 10 tackles.
Tory Gethers and
Noah Williams each had seven tackles, while Williams had a sack and forced fumble.
On offense, the rushing attack paced the Conqs as
Stone Wilson toted the rock 36 times for 181 yards good for five yards a carry.
Kerya Powell added 45 yards on four carries.
The Conqs will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, November 9th, when they travel to El Dorado to take on #10 Butler, with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
