Volleyball Challenges Colby in Playoff Semifinals in Tough Season Ending Match

Dodge City volleyball team after a first-round playoff sweep of Hutchinson took on Colby in the NJCAA Division I Plains District Semifinals and would look to earn a spot into the championship contest. 

The Conquistadors would start the match strong winning the first set but the Trojans of Colby grabbed the next three handing the Conqs a tough 3-1 loss (25-18, 17-25, 23-25, 25-27). 

The match opened tight and back-and-forth early as it was tied 9-9 when the Conqs would go on a 5-0. The Conqs would see Cobly push back but would keep them at arm's length going up 22-16 and then closing out the first set 25-18 to lead the match. The Conqs would fall behind early in the second set and Colby would use that early lead to control the second set on the way to winning it 25-17 to even the match. In the third set, it was tight with both teams owning leads throughout it until Colby went up 24-20 late in the set. The Conqs would fend off set three times but not enough as Colby took the third set 25-23. The fourth set saw the Conqs down early, but they would battle back to tie it at 15-15 and then take the lead going up 23-20. Colby countered to tie the set at 23-23 but the Conqs got a kill by Agnes Hegardt and had set point. The set would work its way to 25-25 when Colby would finish the match scoring the next two points to take the set 27-25 and win the match. 

The Conqs in the loss had a double-double by Beatriz Lampugnani Cornachini as she had 10 kills and 10 digs, with four block assists. Amariah White chipped in eight kills and six block assists, while Hayden Pinard finished with 31 assists and 14 digs. 

The loss caps the Conqs season at 21-14 as the team finishes in the season in the semifinals of the playoffs for the third straight year. The Conqs finished third in the KJCCC with 11 conference wins marking the highest finish since 2010 in the conference and most conference wins since that same season.
