For the third straight year, the Dodge City men's soccer team snagged a win in the season opener this time in Colorado against Lamar as the Conquistadors picked up a 3-0 shutout win.
The Conqs would have a battle on their hands against the Lopes as the contest was back-and-forth early but finally about 15 minutes into the contest the Conqs would secure the lead as Theo Hoang opened the scoring giving the Conqs a 1-0 advantage. Coming out of halftime leading just 1-0 the Conqs looked to be more aggressive, but it was Lamar in the 51st garnering a corner kick that they squared up in the box and got a head-on to push it into the back of the net, however, the Lopes of Lamar were called offside negating the goal leaving the contest a 1-0 Dodge City advantage.Â
Things would pick up for the Conqs the rest of the way scoring in the 69th minute with Cristobal Juan Berrios netting a goal on a Jose Rojas pass, and then just two minutes later Sam Hetsron Etienne added the Conqs' third goal coming off a Rojas pass, also. The Conqs would go on to secure the 3-0 road win over Lamar to open the season with the win.Â
The Conqs ended up doubling up Lamar in shots 14-7 leading to snagging the win. Rojas tallied a pair of assists, while Juan Berrios, Etienne, and Hoang each recorded a goal for the Conqs. Eric Zalaya was in goal for the Conqs and recorded three saves in the shutout win.Â
Up next the Conqs will compete in a scrimmage at Fort Hays State on Sunday, August 20th before opening conference play with the KJCCC opener at home against #11 Barton on Wednesday, August 23rd at 4:00 pm.
