Dodge City baseball traveled to Texas for a four-game series with North Central Texas College and grabbed three wins to claim the series.
The Conquistadors fell 11-7 in the series opener in a tight contest and then bounced back to take game two of the series 14-2 in five innings. Day two of action saw the Conqs claim victory in both games winning 8-7 behind late offense to secure the win, claiming a 9-3 win in the series finale.
The Conqs move to 6-12 on the season as they prepare to open conference play next week against Hutchinson (the schedule for the series will be adjusted because of weather).
Game 1 – Lost 11-7 at NCTC
After a scoreless first inning to open the series, the Conqs were the first to strike on the weekend tallying a run in the top of the second behind an RBI single from
Cooper Schneider. NCTC would counter with a two-run bottom of the second but the Conqs quickly swung the lead back their way with a two-run double by
Cooper Tomkinson in the top of the third making it 3-2. By the end of the third, the Conqs led 5-2 scoring two more runs in the frame. In the bottom of the seventh NCTC would post seven runs to grab the lead 9-5. A solo home run by
Andrew Detlefsen in the fourth and an RBI double from
Zandt Payne drew the Conqs to within two runs but NCTC pushed their lead back out with two runs in the sixth going on to take the game 11-7.
In the loss, the Conqs recorded 12 hits led by Payne who was 3-7 with a double and two RBI, while
Ethan Hewell was 2-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a double. Schneider added a 2-4 showing with an RBI. Tristan took the loss on the mound starting the contest, while
Zade Cisneros tossed a solid 3.1 innings of relief giving up just two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one.
Game 2 – Won 14-2 at NCTC (5 innings)
Early offense in game two highlighted the action and ultimately propelled the Conqs past NCTC for the split of day one action. The Conqs opened the game with a two-run home run in the top of the first by Detlefsen but NCTC answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. In the top of the seventh, the Conqs took firm control of the game scoring seven runs. Schneider brought in a pair on a single to highlight the inning as the Conqs took advantage of two NCTC errors along with drawing five walks and a hit batter to make it 9-2. That lead grew in the third as Detlefsen hit his second home run of the game and third of the day this one a three-run shot making it 12-2. Conqs tacked on two more in the top of the fifth and capped the game in the bottom of the fifth via run rule to win 14-2.
Detlefsen was 2-4 with two runs scored, five RBI, and two home runs to lead the offense while Hewell went 3-4 with four runs scored, a double, and an RBI. On the mound,
Shea Walker tossed two innings giving up just two runs on four hits and one walk, while
Jayden Minter went two innings in relief surrendering a run, giving up just one hit and three walks while striking out four.
Game 3 – Won 8-7 at NCTC
Conqs just like game two of the series would take an early lead scoring a run in the top of the first inning and starter
Michael DeBattista would retire the side in the bottom of the first for the Conqs. After two innings the contest was tied at 1-1 as NCTC plated a run in the bottom of the second but in the top of the third, a
Carson Wright RBI single gave the Conqs the lead back at 2-1. In the fifth, the Conqs added to their lead on a solo home run by Hewell but NCTC would score one also in the fifth. After adding a run in the top of the sixth the Conqs saw NCTC find a way to score five in the bottom of the sixth to hold their first lead at 7-4 entering the seventh. In the top of the seventh, the Conqs would fight back as Payne would register a two-RBI double to draw the Conqs to within one run. Then Schneider and
Nick Mesquita followed with back-to-back RBI triples to give the Conqs the lead at 8-7.
Josh Nolte and the Conq defense shut down NCTC in the bottom of the fifth to grab the 8-7 win.
Schneider was 3-4 with three runs scored, an RBI, a walk, a stolen base, and two triples. Hewell had another multi-hit game going 2-3 with a run scored, RBI, and a walk. DeBattista went a strong four innings giving up just one run on one hit and three walks while striking out six. Nolte tossed the final 1.1 innings recording a pair of strikeouts.
Game 4 – Won 9-3 at NCTC
Just like the prior two contests it was early offense for both teams again in the series finale. The Conqs would open the scoring again plating three runs in the top of the first highlighted by an RBI triple from Hewell. NCTC once again had an early answer with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first. The game remained 3-3 until the top of the fourth when
Caden Matlon belted a two-run home run and hit a grand slam in the top of the fifth to make it 9-3. The Conqs would shut down NCTC over the final few innings to secure the 9-3 win.
Matlon was 2-3 with two runs scored, six RBI, and two home runs, while the Conqs as a team drew nine walks.
Brian Hallum earned the win tossing four innings of scoreless relief giving up just two hits and striking out a pair, while
Chayston Keck tossed two scoreless innings giving up just one hit and striking out one.
