Dodge City women's basketball closed out the regular season with their 21st straight win coming from behind to win a Top 20 battle with Barton claiming a 65-61 victory.
The Conquistadors capped the regular season with a 28-2 record and a 23-1 mark in KJCCC action. The Conqs won the KJCCC title for the first time since 1987-88 while breaking school records for single-season wins and single-season KJCCC wins.
Both teams started slow but it was a tight battle as the game was tied at 11-11 with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Barton would go on a 6-0 run to go up 17-11 but
Jada Burton would drain a three-pointer to make it 17-14 after the first 10 minutes. Conqs would swing the lead in their favor early in the second quarter and it would remain tight through the first five minutes of the second but Barton answered with a 10-1 run to regain control. By halftime the Conqs trailed 35-26, finding themselves behind only for the fourth time this season at halftime. Barton shot 52.2% from the field in the first half while the Conqs shot only 31.3% from the field and were only 2-18 from three-point range. In the second half, the Conqs pushed back at Barton and it was a late surge in the third quarter that drew the Conqs to within one point at 50-49 heading into the fourth. The Conqs would outscore Barton 23-15 in the third quarter as the Conqs ended the third on a 12-0 run. In the fourth, the lead swung the way of the Conqs for the first time with 6:59 remaining at 53-52 and it would be tight the rest of the way. A
Leah Mafua three-pointer drew the Conqs back to within one at 61-60 with a minute and a half left then Mafua would tally a layup to give the Conqs the lead at 62-61 the Conqs clamped down defensively to stop Barton from scoring again going on to grab the 65-61 victory.
In the win, the Conqs finished just 37.7% shooting while Barton shot 44.9% but the Conqs' defense overall helped earn the win as they recorded eight blocks, 12 steals and forced 23 Barton turnovers.
Burton led the Conqs with 16 points adding four rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Mafua finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two blocks.
Bree Stephens chipped in 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while also recording four blocks as she broke the school record for career blocks.
Paris Santacaterina chipped in 11 points for the Conqs off the bench.
Up next the Conqs prepare for postseason action as they are the #1 seed for the Region VI Tournament and will have a first-round bye and will await the winner of Cowley and Independence for a matchup in the quarterfinals. The Conqs will host the quarterfinals at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, March 7th.
