Dodge City women's basketball run in the Region VI tournament ended after a tough 75-65 overtime loss to Coffeyville in the semifinals.
The Conquistadors with the loss fall to 29-3 on the season and see their program's longest win streak of 22 games come to an end. The #10 Conqs' future now lays in the hands of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament selection committee as the Conqs will look to grab an at-large bid.
It was a slow start for both teams to open the contest with each team holding leads in the first quarter and by the end of the first 10 minutes Coffeyville led 12-11. The lead stayed in the hands of the Red Ravens of Coffeyville for a majority of the second quarter the Conqs would stay within striking distance and ultimately outscore the Red Ravens 15-11 in the second to lead 26-23 at halftime. Coffeyville opened the second half on a 6-0 run and the offensive struggles continued for the Conqs but a late three-pointer in the third quarter by
Bree Stephens makes it a one-point game as Coffeyville led 40-39. Conqs feverishly fought in the fourth to stay close tying the game and drawing within one several times and ultimately tied the game at 57-57 and the final 25 seconds would expire without anyone getting on the board leading to overtime. In overtime, Coffeyville jumped ahead and ultimately took control leading to the 75-65 final.
Conqs shot just 34.9% from the field in the contest while Coffeyville only shot 36.5% but went 20-25 from the free throw line and won the rebounding battle 42-34.
Leah Mafua tallied 18 points for the Conqs adding six rebounds, seven assists, and six steals, while Stephens added 15 points with five rebounds and two steals.
The Conqs now await the NJCAA Division I selection show on Sunday at 6:00 pm on the NJCAA Network to see if they earn an at-large bid to the NJCAA DI National Tournament in Hutchinson.
