Dodge City hit the road for the second straight weekend to continue the early portion the season and traveled to Hobbs, New Mexico to take on New Mexico Junior College for a four-game series.
The Conquistadors would challenge a Thunderbirds ultimately falling 7-2 and 9-5 in games one and two of the series on Friday, and then on Saturday suffered a tough 7-6 loss in game three before finishing the series with a 15-14 win.
The 1-3 performance moves the Conqs to 2-5 on the season as they will continue play in non-conference action next weekend February 18
th and 19
th at the University of Central Oklahoma Showcase tournament in Edmond, Oklahoma. The Conqs will play Rose State, Seminole State, and Coffeyville.
Game 1 – at New Mexico Lost 7-2
It was some early base runners that helped the Conqs take the initial lead of the series as
Andrew Detlefsen brought in
Zandt Payne in the first inning with an RBI single to make it 1-0. New Mexico would tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth with their first run. In the top of the fifth the Conqs regained the lead has Payne's leadoff double would lead to him coming around to score to make it 2-1. New Mexico would have the first big inning of the weekend in the bottom of the fifth as they tallied six runs and would go on to take the game 7-2 over the Conqs.
In the loss the Conqs saw Payne go 2-2 with two runs scored, a walk, and double, while
Caden Matlon added a 2-4 performance. On the mound
Tristan Wolf was stout tossing 4.1 innings striking out five giving up five runs on three walks and eight hits, taking the loss.
Game 2 – at New Mexico Lost 9-5
Conqs fell behind early in game two of the series as New Mexico recorded two runs in the bottom of the first inning. In the fifth inning with two-outs the Conqs would take advantage of multiple New Mexico errors, a wild pitch, and walk to score three runs and take the lead. New Mexico matched the Conqs with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and then three more in the sixth, while the Conqs got one sixth. Both teams would add a run in the eighth leading to New Mexico taking the game 9-5.
Detlefsen finished 3-5 for the Conqs to lead the way recording a run scored and triple. On the mound
Zade Cisneros tossed a solid 4.1 innings of relief giving up three runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out six.
Game 3 – at New Mexico Lost 7-6
Day two of the series saw a pair of one-run games and in game three of the four-game series the Conqs would fall on a walk-off by the Thunderbirds. A Payne solo home run got the offense started for the Conqs in the first inning, but New Mexico answered with two runs in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third the Conqs capitalized on Thunderbird miscues drawing a walk, having a hit batter, and a New Mexico error to load the bases. Payne then drew a walk with bases loaded to bring in a run and then Detlefsen notched a two RBI single to give the Conqs three runs in the third. New Mexico would also score three in the third. In the fourth the Conqs added two runs with a
Nick Mesquita two RBI single, while New Mexico got a run back in the bottom of the fourth to tie game at 6-6. Contest would make its way to the seventh still tied and in the bottom of the seventh inning New Mexico took advantage of an opportunity grab the 7-6 win.
In the loss the Conqs saw Payne go 2-3 with two RBI, a run scored, walk, and home run to highlight the offense.
Justus Revill tossed four innings of work as the starter and
Shea Walker tossed two innings of relief in the contest.
Game 4 – at New Mexico Won 15-14
The series finale would feature 29 total runs and include two half innings one by each team that saw eight and 10 runs scored in them. New Mexico jumped up big in the bottom of the second inning posting eight runs, but it didn't take long for the Conqs to answer as they would be credited with 10 runs in the top of the third. The third inning was highlighted by a Detlefsen two RBI single, along with bases loaded walks by
Carson Wright and
Ethan Hewell, and a two RBI single by
Chase Haley. The Conqs lead grew with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings each, but New Mexico tallied four in the seventh and one more in the eighth. In the top of the ninth
Cooper Schneider blasted a solo home run and the Conqs would take the series finale 15-14.
Payne again had a multi-hit game for the Conqs going 2-5 with a run scored, RBI, walk, and double. Hewell finished 2-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, and double, while Haley finished 2-5 with three RBI, two runs scored. Schneider added a 2-3 showing with three runs scored, two RBI, a walk, and a home run. On the mound
Brian Hallum was great in relief tossing four innings of scoreless action giving up just three hits and struckout seven.
Ashton Jenkins tossed the final three innings to earn the win giving up just one run on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
