Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Mike Smith

Women's Basketball Makes It a 3-0 Trip to Texas With Win Over #23 Odessa

The 3-0 start to the season is the first since the 2019-20 campaign as they picked up wins at #13 South Plains, along with against Midland and at #23 Odessa.

The contest would be consistently tight most of the game early the Conquistadors would establish a 12-6 lead with 6:25 left in the first quarter on a Tayah Morgan three-pointer but with four minutes left in the first stanza Odessa snatched the lead at 16-15. The Conqs would answer back and own a 23-21 lead after the first quarter of action. The second quarter was much of the same as the first with both teams holding leads as it traded hands back-and-forth multiple times. At halftime, the Conqs carried a 39-36 advantage on the road against the Wranglers of Odessa. The Conqs continually held Odessa at bay in the third quarter as the Wranglers tied the game up multiple times but the Conqs answered and a Paris Santacaterina layup and three-pointer late in the third quarter gave the Conqs a five-point lead at 64-59. That lead disappeared in the fourth as Odessa wrangled in the lead at 65-64 briefly but the Conqs again responded and would not trail the rest of the contest icing the game with three seconds to go on a pair of Layla-J Cameron free throws to earn the 82-78 win.

Five double-figure scorers paced the Conqs in another strong shooting performance as the Conqs shot 46.4% from the field and 42.9% from three-point range hitting nine three-pointers and went 21-26 from the free-throw line. Conqs would overcome 26 turnovers and were plus four in the rebound battle.

Santacaterina dropped 18 points on 7-13 shooting and 3-3 free throws, while Parris Atkins added 13 points, five steals, and five rebounds. Shorna Preston contributed 12 points with five rebounds, while Morgan finished with 11 points. Cameron added 10 points and was 3-3 from the field.

Trip number two of the season to Texas is on the docket for the Conqs next as they will head to Midland for three games as part of the Midland Classic on November 9th-11th. Conqs will play Midland on Thursday, November 9th at 7:00 pm, then Weatherford on Friday, November 10th at 5:00 pm, and wrap up the trip against Arizona Western at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 11th.
