It was a heartbreaking finish to the season as the Dodge City men's soccer hosted an opening-round playoff match for the second time in the last three years this time taking on KCK.
The Conquistadors would go the full 90 minutes scoreless with KCK and head into overtime where 1:58 into the extra period the Blue Devils would score and snag the 1-0 victory to end the Conqs season. The Conqs finish the season 10-5-2.
After a quick flurry by KCK early in the match where the Blue Devils had a couple of looks towards the goal the Conqs responded to then control possession and would have several great crosses in the box but would be unable to connect leading to a 0-0 score at halftime. In the second half, KCK would outshoot the Conqs but both teams would get opportunities but come up empty forcing the game to overtime. Shortly into the extra period KCK booted a ball ahead and made a quick counter run and found the back of the net handing the Conqs a 1-0 loss.
Nearly even in shots in the contest as the Conqs outshot KCK just 12-11 in the matchup. Eric Zalaya in the loss picked up five saves giving up 40 on the season and 78 in his career which ranks ninth most in a career in school history.
In year seven under Head Coach, Oscar Zelaya posted a 10-5-2 record for the season which marks the sixth winning season out of seven under Zelaya and the fourth time he's guided the Conqs to 10 wins in a single season.
