Football Earns Fourth Win of Season With Road Win Over Ellsworth

The Dodge City football made the long trek to Iowa Falls, Iowa to take on Ellsworth and came out of the contest with a 21-7 road win despite some struggles and a depleted roster.

The victory moves the Conquistadors to 4-3 on the season and gives the Conqs their most wins since the 2017 season with three games remaining in the season.

The Conqs put together a solid drive early in the contest finding the endzone with 8:59 left in the first quarter as Bryce Conover connected with Keith Liggins for a 12-yard touchdown pass leading to a 7-0 lead. The contest would remain 7-0 going into halftime as the Conqs offense struggled to get going after the initial score but the defense would stop Ellsworth multiple times in the redzone in the first half. After a scoreless fourth quarter, the Conqs defense took scoring into their hands as Kenyan Hunter intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards for a pick-six leading to a 14-0 Conqs lead with 13:10 remaining. The Conqs would find the endzone once more on a six-yard touchdown run by Jalen Smith and lead 21-0. Looking for the shutout the Conqs saw Ellsworth bust off a 68-yard touchdown run to get them on the board and the Conqs would finish the contest 21-7.

The Conqs defense held Ellsworth to just 247 total yards and only 10 first downs in the contest as Dwight Nunoo led the defense with nine tackles and a sack. Chris Fitzpatrick added seven tackles including a tackle for loss, while Tory Gethers added seven tackles, and both Dallas Robinson and Moses Sarweh each had five tackles.

Offensively the Conqs had just 219 total yards in the matchup with Jalen Smith spearheading the offense as he ran for 134 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries.

Up next the Conqs return home on Saturday, October 21st as they will host Iowa Central for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
