For the first time since 2015, the Dodge City football team has claimed victory in the KJCCC rivalry clash with Garden City dispatching the Broncbusters 33-10 on homecoming.
The Conquistadors with the win moved to 3-2 on the season and 3-0 in KJCCC play. The win is the first for Conqs in the series since 2015 and the first at home over Garden City since 2014.
After both struggled to find points in the previous week it was early scoring to open the game as both teams took their opening drive down the field to record points. Garden City after a strong kickoff return to open the game worked to just outside the redzone and nailed a 41-yard field goal to take the initial lead 3-0. The Conqs countered covering 65 yards on six plays in just under three minutes with Treyvon Jefferson scampering in for a 10-yard touchdown run and with the extra point the Conqs led 7-3. Garden City was on the doorstep of the endzone late in the first quarter and early in the second quarter the Broncbusters faced a fourth and goal from the one-yard line and the Conqs would stop Garden City, to maintain the lead.
In the second quarter the Conqs would add to their lead as Bobby Arnold III picked off a Broncbuster pass and made a house call for the pick-six making it 14-3 then next Conqs offensive drive it was only one play to find the endzone again as Jalen Smith busted off a 37-yard touchdown run making it 21-3. Garden City would get their first touchdown just before halftime leading to the Conqs carrying a 21-10 lead into halftime.
That score in the final portion of the second quarter by the Broncbusters proved to be the last points they would get as the Conqs controlled the second half. Angel Dominguez would hit a 38-yard field goal for the Conqs to extend the lead to 24-10 with 13:06 left in the third quarter and in the fourth Jefferson found Jalen Smith for an eight-yard touchdown pass and with the extra point the Conqs led 31-10. The last points came on a safety with an intentional grounding call coming on Garden City in their endzone with 8:06 left in the game leading to the Conqs 33-10 win.
Conqs would outgain Garden City 308-204 in total offense and have a balanced attack with 172 yards coming on the ground and 136 through the air. The turnover battle was also won by the Conqs 3-1 as the defense grabbed two interceptions and a fumble recovery. The defense has held four straight opponents to 260 total yards or less.
Jefferson finished with 136 yards passing and one touchdown while rushing for 57 yards and another touchdown. Smith had his second 100+ yard performance of the season rushing for 122 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown, while adding a receiving touchdown. Greg Genross snagged three passes for 76 yards.
Defensively, Dwight Nunoo led the charge with 13 tackles and a forced fumble, while Arnold recorded nine tackles with an interception. Tyrence Crutcher recovered a fumble, while Mar'Quavious Moss snagged an interception.
