Dodge City men's basketball team capped a historic season with a tough loss in the Elite Eight of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Hutchinson falling 92-74 to Northwest Florida State.
The loss finishes the season at 30-5 for the Conquistadors as they cap a year filled with accomplishments including first KJCCC title since 2007, first Region VI title since 1982, and first trip to National Tournament since 1982, and first trip to Hutchinson since 1974 (first round in 1982 not hosted at Hutchinson), while also setting a school record for wins in a single season with 30.
Conqs fell behind 6-0 to open the game but answered with a 7-0 run to snag their first lead at 7-6 as the game was low scoring and slow going in the first half. Northwest Florida State responded to grab the lead back and the Conqs uphill battle would continue throughout the contest falling behind by as many as 12 in the first half and trailing 43-32 at intermission. Despite several advances by the Conqs in the second half the shots including multiple three-pointers continued to fall for Northwest Flordia State and the Conqs were never able to overcome the deficit ultimately seeing the difference pushed out late as the contest finished 92-74 in favor of Northwest Florida State.
After shooting just 33% in the first half the Conqs shot 46.3% in the contest and went 18-22 from the free-throw line, while Northwest Florida State shot 46.2% for the game including 14 three-pointers and 18-21 free throws.
Kalen Williams led the Conqs with 20 points going 7-7 from the free-throw line adding six rebounds and four assists.
Oumar Koureissi added 17 points on 7-12 shooting and grabbed five rebounds, while
Themus Fulks tallied 17 points on 7-9 shooting.
The Conqs cap their historic 30-5 season with a run into the Elite Eight of the NJCAA DI National Tournament.
