Dodge City women's basketball team played their fourth game in seven days as they squared off with the top team in the Jayhawk Conference in the Independence and picked up their 18
th win of the season capturing a 60-55 win.
The win moves the Conquistadors to 18-11 on the season and 13-10 in KJCCC action. The 18 wins mark the most since in a single season since 2005-06 season, while the Conqs have assured themselves a home playoff game.
It was a slow start to the contest by both teams, but Independence would work to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter, but the Conqs responded to trail just 12-9 after the first stanza. The Conqs would snag the lead early in the second quarter as the Pirates of Independence went scoreless for the first four minutes of the quarter. After a 16-4 run to open the second quarter the Conqs led 25-16 and with a 21-10 second quarter the Conqs carried a 30-22 lead into halftime, capitalizing on the three-pointer going 6-11 form three in the first half. The second half opened with Independence going on a 10-0 run to take a 32-30 lead and a 20-8 third quarter by the Pirates led to a 42-38 score with Independence leading entering the fourth quarter. The Conqs pushed back in the fourth quarter and regained the lead at 46-45 and went up by eight again in the final 30 seconds and held off the Pirates for the 60-55 win.
The Conqs finished the day with 14 assists on 20 made field goals and defensively held the Pirates to just 30% shooting and recorded 12 steals.
Krystina Hagood paced the Conqs with 17 points including going 4-6 from three-point range, while
Jada Burton chipped in 15 points while adding six rebounds and five assists.
Jenna Rose Mafua scored 14 points while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out four assists.
Bree Stephens added 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals, and four blocks.
Teona Pop Stojanova was strong off the bench grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds.
The Conqs will wrap up the regular season on the road on Wednesday, February 23
rd at Barton at 5:30 pm as they look to secure their seed in the Region tournament.
